I just received my starting kit and my grains and although I needed a few more things I decided to make do with what I had. I figured worst case scenario I would mess it up, waste some grain and start again. YES, I AM IMPATIENT, sorry. :( I just wanted to start playing :p

So... this is my grain bill, hops and yeast:

7.00 lb Pale Malt (2 Row) US (2.0 SRM)
0.75 lb Cara-Pils/Dextrine (2.0 SRM)
0.50 lb Caramel/Crystal Malt - 10L (10.0 SRM)
0.50 lb Vienna Malt (3.5 SRM)
0.25 oz Centennial [9.50%] (55 min)
0.25 oz Centennial [9.50%] (35 min)
0.25 oz Cascade [7.80%] (20 min)
0.25 oz Cascade [7.80%] (5 min)
1 Pkgs Safale-05 (Hydrated)

I was going to brew BMs Centennial Blonde (5 gallons) but with my limitations I somehow ended up with only about 3 gallons of wort. I would have topped it off with water since the OG was way off but I wasn't ready and had only tap water, so I decided to leave it alone. I ended up with an OG of 1.062.

Can somebody please tell me what to expect? It should end up similar to what?

PS - Still I'm happy I did it. It smells wonderful! I think it's going to be good, just waaaay different to the original intention :cross:

Well, BeerTools shows you had an efficiency of 61%. Your recipe looks like it has a color of 8.63 SRM, and 34.7 IBU. That puts you into APA territory, except that you're a bit above the style on OG and near the style minimum for bitterness. Using 05 that's probably your closest fit. You could also call it an under bittered IPA.

What was your mash temperature? That will have significant effect on your finished product. If you can get this beer to dry out so that sweetness and bitterness are in balance then I think you'll wind up with a nice beer. Even if not it'll be drinkable. If I were you I would dry hop the heck out of it, but I'm like that.

Yes, at first glance I too thought American Pale Ale but the 0.25 oz hop additions seem a bit weak. I suppose it will make a very smooth, drinkable beverage but if you want to get a more aggressive aroma then dry hop it with at least two ounces of hops. Doing so will also allow some minds to perceive the beer to be slightly more bitter than it actually is!

I am not quite sure as to what it would be similar to. It looks like there's a lot going on with the malts but I know the Cascade and Centennial combination is popular in many hoppy beers.

Thanks for the replies guys. Mash temperature was 160*. Target was 150* but it was hard to control in my apartment stovetop. I started adding heat and it got too high.

I can't believe I also misread the recipe at the last minute, although it might be a good thing in the end. I cut and pasted from BMs recipe for Centennial Blonde for my post. The grain bill is accurate, but my hop additions are actually .5 each instead of .25 :p

So I guess I should end up with something between an APA and an IPA? Or is it now in the IPA hoppiness range? I don't mind hoppy :D

Well, with .5 oz for every hop addition you're in solid American IPA range, except that your hop flavor will be low, and your aroma will also be lacking. Again, DRY HOP!!! If it were me I'd use a 50/50 blend of cent and casc, and I'd use about 2 oz for 1-2 weeks before bottling. If you keg even better, just dry hop in the keg. With a mash temp of 160 it'll be sweet, but you're close to 70 IBU, so it may turn out well balanced. Again, DRY HOP!!! This may turn out to be your new favorite IPA.

Ive gotten really good results just doing late additon hops rather than dry hopping.I would mix those hops for aroma and add more. I used .5 for aroma for a 2 gal ipa.you could do more aroma late hop additions instead of dryhopping also.I have no complaints with late additons.
Im shure it will turn out great the way you have it.

Again, DRY HOP!!! This may turn out to be your new favorite IPA.

I will. I just got my new credit car (I had to cancel mine 'cause it was compromised) so I will get more hops and dry hop the heck out of it, let's see how it comes out. I will also try to brew it properly next week.

Again, thanks for the replies. This forum rocks!
