I really enjoyed my time at Westbrook. Beautiful location, nice taproom, good people, great beer.

Thoroughly enjoyed the moment a group came in and one of the women asked if they had gluten free beer. The employee working the bar, a large fellow, looked her dead in the eye and said he was "semi-offended that she even asked" she then asked if they had any wine.

Nope, you had it right the first time :D

LMAO...I love D-Rock! I wasn't there but I can easily picture that entire scenario and probably would have busted out laughing. :p

Here's the latest from the internet rumor mill (which of course means take this **** with a massive grain of salt):

-$30/bottle, up from $20 last year. I'm sure people will complain if that's the case, but it's in line with other hyped stouts (BA Abraxas, Assassin, etc.) and will sell out anyways.

-Ticket pickup (or something analogous) on a Friday, with bottle pickup the day after on Saturday. I must say if that's the plan, it's a pretty good way to favor "locals" (i.e. people who go there regularly) without something stupid like checking IDs or the usual tedium about whether someone who lives in Savannah is more "local" than someone who lives further away but in South Carolina, and so on.

Once again this is just internet chatter that I'm relaying, and if it's totally inaccurate then that's no shock.

This is accurate, from what I've heard and who I've heard it through.

Amazingly enough I might actually be able to make this even though I'm working a beer festival later that day, dat 9am release time! pgh_penguins I'll probably come down morning-of if I do (went hard in the paint on lambics at Edmund's Oast last weekend) but I'm sure I'll see you guys there.

Anyone with Facebook needs to read the comments on Westbrook's announcement, one guy is going absolutely insane. I'm sure BA will be just as bad.

Also looks like the internet rumor mill was full of **** on every speculative detail except the price tags, and my pure speculation earlier was also way off. No surprise on either front.

I'm kind of wishing Westbrook had announced this on Friday night or something, I can't wait to see the **** show at 6am that will be the line bum rush. If someone jumps out of a moving car then the beer trades 1:1 for Double Barrel Damon right?

"2014 Barrel-Aged Mexican Cake will be released on Saturday 9/20 at 9am. This year there are three different variants - bourbon, tequila, and double barrel.

Bourbon - aged 12 months in barrels from four roses distillery.
Tequila - aged 12 months in tequila barrels (producer unknown).
Double Barrel - aged 12 months in bourbon and rye whiskey barrels from Pritchard's distillery.

The price per bottle will be $30, including sales tax. Cash and cards will be accepted. If you are paying with credit/debit the price will be $1 higher per bottle to offset the card processing fee. Bottle limits per person are as follows:
(2) Bourbon
(2) Tequila
(4) Double Barrel

The limits for each variant are independent of the total number of bottles purchased. For example, if you only buy (2) Double Barrel you are still limited to (2) bottles each of Tequila and Bourbon.

Here is how the release will work:

At some point before 9am Saturday morning (exactly when will depend on how many people are in line) we will start checking IDs and handing out wristbands to the first 425 people in line. Bottle sales for people with wristbands will start at 9am."

That sounds like a shitshow and a half.

Pre-trade ISOs already popping up on the other channel, including a gopickitupformebro offering $100 per bottle! Saturday morning is going to be a disaster and I'm already mad at myself for wanting to go.

pgh_penguins and anyone else traveling down I-95 for this: there's a beer festival/homebrew competition in Florence I'm working at from 2-6 and when it's done we are going to have an after-party at my friend's house when we do all our homebrewing. If anyone wants to stop by you're welcome to, we'll have a bunch of my homebrews on tap and also plan to crack some bottles (especially if one of us wins the comp - my Chocolate Rain boot Intihar avatar is from the same after-party a year ago). Will probably order pizza or something too. Shoot me a message for the address.

can someone describe to me what they thought "double barrel aged" meant to them? I was under the impression double barrel aged meant the beer was put in 1 barrel, then removed and put in another barrel for 2x the amount of total aging time. this seems like its simply a blend of 2 barrels

Means the same thing it did to Cigar City for "Double Barrel" Hunahpu.

**** that! Announced too early and $30 a bottle + $1 fee if you use a credit card. Ummmm, how come they don't charge me $1 every time I stop by for a beer or two? Westbrook is good, but not Cigar City or The Bruery good. They're getting a little too cocky.

I'd take Westbrook's beers over Cigar City's any day of the week. Just my personal opinion though.

This is what it should mean but the term has been messed up (not sure if Cigar City started it or not with DB Huna or someone else did it first) and now it's getting used for blends. I joke that Firestone Walker should take the piss by releasing one of their anniversary beers as "Septuple Barrel Ale" or something like that.

Yes, just like Evil Twin Double Barrel Jesus and Cigar City Double Barrel Hunahpu.

Sorry, I honestly dont know any background on either of those. Were those also just blends of 2 different barrels?

Edit, ok disregard I gotcha now.

DBH is 50% apple brandy and 50% rum. DBJ I think is just blends of two bourbon barrels and was Jeppe's way of poking fun at the "double barrel" term abuse, but I could be wrong.

Already seen some complaints that this is on the same day as Zwanze Day, despite the fact there is no Zwanze event in South Carolina or any neighboring state. Perhaps all these breweries should have a big pow-pow to plan out all the releases and events a year in advance so as to not inconvenience the ability of out-of-market beer geeks to attend every single thing.

but brah, you can't release beers on a schedule without compromising quality!

They're not going to let me pre-order MC sets and then ship them to me?!?!? Don't they know I live in Florida and have purchased via proxy several 6 packs of Gose? I am practically their MAIN BENEFACTOR. OUTRAGE. SCANDAL.

I'm really enjoying the discourse on Champagne vs Mexican Cake on the Facebook post. This is great stuff.

Regarding "double barrel", has there been any beer called that that wasn't a blend? That actually went into one barrel, and then another? Because I can't think of any.

Pretty sure Double Barrel Damon was aged in one barrel, then another. Might be wrong though.

I know of a "triple barrel", Oxbow 3 Barrels Deep was aged for 6 months at a time in bourbon, red wine, and white wine.

Ding ding ding! That's the OG double barrel beer too, as far as I'm aware of. Says online aged over two years - one year in port, one year in Van Winkle.

Also there is someone on the other site pretrading double barrel MC for VSB, and he already has it because he works for Westbrook. Ahaha!
