West Coast hops in a Brown?

I think a few U.S. breweries are making a hoppy "brown", presumably without the Fuggles/EKG that is typically used. Hqas anyone seen a good recipe for something like this, or can give me some pointers on what hops/IBUs and yeast to use?

Use any kind of American hop; I'd try and stick to the Cascade types. I'd go for hops around 70-80% of your gravity (i.e. 1.050 OG then 35-40 IBU).

just early this week I put into primary a brown with warrior (wanted nugget...LHBS was out), northern brewer, willamette, and...more willamette.

I think it was around 5.5oz total

I think Mike McDole's 'Janet's Brown Ale' is a delicious example of a hoppy american brown. I've brewed it a few times and everyone seems to enjoy the results.

I Brewed a brown mild. with one ounce fuggles bittering 1 ounce cascade flavor and one hounce aroma,


lovely beer at 3 weeks. I am stoked to see what it will be like in another couple weeks.

Both are citrusy American hops that are commonly referred to as the C hops. Pretty much all American hops are west coast now.

I've had browns with Amarillo and Willamete that were really good.

No, I didn't mean the hops, I meant the beer! What BJCP category. I don't think these would fit into category 11.

edit --- Never mind, I just realized it's in cat 10 American Ale, 10C "Brown Ale".

I guess it depends on how strong it is. From the 10C description:

Comments: A strongly flavored, hoppy brown beer, originated by American home brewers. Related to American Pale and American Amber Ales, although with more of a caramel and chocolate character, which tends to balance the hop bitterness and finish. Most commercial American Browns are not as aggressive as the original homebrewed versions, and some modern craft brewed examples. IPA-strength brown ales should be entered in the Specialty Beer category (23).
Vital Statistics: OG: 1.045 – 1.060
IBUs: 20 – 40 FG: 1.010 – 1.016
SRM: 18 – 35 ABV: 4.3 – 6.2%
