Yeah, that made the paper up here. We were laughing pretty good at it. Apparently they even did some confirming anaylsis at one point. It was attributed to the FBI I think.

The "discovery" actually led to a ridiculous warning from the U.S. Defence Department that coins with radio transmitters had been found on three contractors with top secret clearance as they came through Canada.

I actually received a work email about thie DoD warning. I couldn't keep a straight face when I read it.

Sure, to us it's funny. But to those who realize that anything can be a tracking device, it's a bit scary.

There are easier ways to track somebody than to insert a chip into a quarter. Just slip one of those Nike iPod sensors on them and you can track them everywhere they go using a modified GPS. Figure out how to attach a little mic. to it and you can listen to them too.

Why go to the trouble and expense of the I-pod when you can do the exact same thing with thier own cell phone?

Watch the movie The Recruit. They have organic spy microphones that will attach to almost any surface and consume itself in 48 hours. That creeped me out.

Yeah, that's true Cheese, but it takes considerable effort and expense to put a transmitter on someone and it would be nice for it to have a life span longer than it takes to buy a doughnut. It wasn't so much much that we were laughing at the prospect of a micro transmitter being planted, it was the folly of thinking that someone with so advanced a technology would plant it on an item that can and likely will be disposed of at any time.
