When making a 5 gallong batch how much water would you put into the boil pot for a one hour boil?

Do you have to take into consideration the weight of the ingredients and use less water? Or do you start with a full 5 gallons?

Also is there an ideal temperature to maintain during the 60 minute boil?

On my stovetop, I start with 6.4 gallons (including the ingredients) to end up with a 5 gallon batch into the fermenter.

You don't have to monitor the boiling temperature- boiling is boiling. A nice rolling boil for 60 minutes is perfect.

Im doing a 20 gallon boil, can i boil with 10 gallons and keep the other 10 gallons cold and use to top up the fermentator?

I am a total noob, but from what I gather that should be fine. It seems that full boils are ideal but you can do partial (half or more) and top off with the rest. It will also help to cool it some.
Good luck,
:fro:
