Hello all,
I bought a bunch of apple varieties to try my hand at making a cider from scratch. I juiced them and made a one gallon batch.

The question I have is regarding how I washed them...without thinking, I washed each apple with a sponge and liquid dish washing detergent. I didn't think anything of it as I wash my hands with it. However, I've read some articles that say you should NOT do that as it leaves toxic chemicals behind.

Currently the batch is sitting with sodium sulfites and I planned to pitch the yeast tonight...should I dump it, or is there nothing to worry about? Don't want to be drinking chemical cider!

Thanks in advance

The question is, how much do you have invested in this already, and are you willing to risk a visit to the E.R. if it doesn't go well... It's supposed to be made in such a way that residue on dishes isn't going to kill you, but that doesn't mean the apples didn't soak up as much as they could into their skin...

In the future, fruit doesn't need to be washed like a bowl. Light rinsing and rubbing with your hands(make sure your hands are clean--sanitizer, not dish soap. Make sure it isn't toxic and/or unfit for human consumption.)

I think I agree with you - just going to toss it. Next time I'll be sure to wash with just water.

I know what apple blend I'm going for, so next time around should be quick!

Huh, I would think you'd need to drink a LOT of dish soap to warrant a visit to the ER. Seems like if you rinsed, you should be fine... You rinse glasses off after wishing with that stuff, then drink water out of them.

My point was that apples are porous, unlike dishes. How much of it was absorbed into the fruit?

I think it's going to taste awful long before it hurts you. A tablespoon of dish soap in a gallon of liquid will be really foul, and you won't get past a couple sips... Which is a fraction of a gram. Maybe you should just taste the juice to see if it's soapy.

Over here we have wash up liquid in all sorts of flavours like , lemon zest, orange, lime, cool mint and of course APPLE !
If making cider i would go for the apple, hee, hee.

I am sure that a squirt of wash liquid will do no harm at all, any residue can't be any worse than the four months or so of detritus the fruit accumulated on the tree, be that on the skin or absorbed into the skin.
