You want to cool the wort as fast as possible and pitch yeast to limit the possibility of contaminants or wild yeast getting to your wort and causing off flavors.

But other than that, if you can seal it up with NO exposure to air, you should be ok. But personally, I like to pitch yeast right away so they can get about their business. Why do you wanna wait?
 
First why do you need to let it sit for 12 hours? I have to wait 24 hours for my wort to cool enough to pitch the yeast because of my current location here in Singapore. I can get it down to around 90 within 10 minutes. I know I can use ice but ice is expensive here.
