Hey everyone. Doing an IPA and I am going to split the batch and make half of it a black or dark IPA. I want to keep the same original flavor. This will be done during fermentation or after. I have some carafa III. Can I basically grind it up and make a "tea" with it and then add it to the wort? Basically cold steeping like when I added cold brewed coffee. I want to surprise people in a blind taste test when they open their eyes. This is totally for fun and gimicky for sure. Just wanted to see what people have done out there. Thanks.
 
I've used midnight wheat for color. I only needed a few ounces. Not sure how a pound or more would react. I didn't find it added any flavor so I was satisfied.
 
Sinamar is an all natural liquid extract with a color of roughly 3,100 Lovibond. Many of the big guns among the worlds breweries use it regularly. It has been on the market for over 100 years. A little goes a long way. 4 ounces will raise the color of 5 gallons of beer by 16 Lovibond points. $6.99 for 4 ounces at Northern Brewer.

Might be more fun to use Black or red food coloring in a single kind of beer but let them see the beer. See how many people lets their eyes determine the flavor and character of the beer.

edit: I would not add raw grain to a fermenting beer, seems like a good way to sour or contaminate your beer. If you make a tea you should boil it at least for a short time.

I would basically brew the Carafa III then add it. The reason I was thinking the carafa III is because I have some leftover that I want to use up.
 
I’ve used Carafa III as a late addition to my mash and got all the color with no added flavors. I would grind it up as you normally would and add it to the mash with ten minutes remaining.
 
Cold steep a debittered malt like you are cold brewing coffee. Boil, cool, add to color
