I could of sworn I posted this before, but I can't find it so here goes again or for the first time.
Here on O`ahu the west side is quite dry and during the summers the vegetation on the hill sides turn brown. On of the common trees here is what we call Kiawe or as you in the Southwest Mesquite. I picked up a pound of Mesquite Smoked 2 Row and plan to use it to add a smoky flavor to this ale. Kind of like the air here smells during a summer brush fire. This will be the last of my three brews and will complete Saturday's shopping list.

C-Rider,
I'm not sure I'm reading your recipe right. It seems you are planning on using a total of 2.5 pounds base malt and some specialty grains. I should also say that I'm not a big fan of smoked beers just yet. All the ones I've tried have been overly smokey and the beer flavor was lost. That being said a beer that puts you in a state of mind or reminds you of a special time can't be bad. What size batch are you brewing?
On a side note I'll be on the island in Feb. Where is the best place to find some good craft brews?

Aloha,
Batch size is 1.75 gal. Been wondering bout the smoke amt. I did one sometime ago w/8oz and it is good. Thought I'd try a full lb and see what happens.
Gordon Bierch (sp) in the Aloha Tower, Kona Brewing in Hawai`i Kai, Sam Choy down town Honolulu, and there is a place in Waikiki but can't think of the name. Big nation wide chain w/many many beers.
