After looking into some bulk hops I've started to search for a decent but affordable vacuum sealer. I would prefer one that is easy to use with those mylar aluminum bags.

Is there a couple recommended vacuum sealers that are proven to work well with folks on here for doing hops in mylar bags?

Thanks!

I found the Mylar bags don't work great with my Foodsaver unfortunately. They work ok, but need a rougher surface to suck the air out. It sort of works if you squeeze out as much air as possible. If you are OK with putting them in Foodsaver bags, it works great. I found the seal isn't trustworthy either(luckily the hops that opened up were relatively cheap Columbus. I typically just order my bulk hops from Yakima Valley and they provide resealable mylar. Been working pretty well for me for over a year now in my garage fridge/freezer.

Overall though, I love my Foodsaver and use it to reseal DME and potato chip bags too, in addition to the normal food stuff. So much so that it lives on the kitchen counter.

You can reseal potato chip bags? I'm assuming you just do the "seal" setting, and not the "vacuum/seal" setting, right? Wouldn't drawing a vacuum crush the chips?

The Sinbo and other snorkel-type vacuum sealers work with mylar bags. I don't have one, but they get good reviews.

Well thanks for the info, in reply to everyone using normal bags are there any negatives to this? I just always figured they sell in mylar bags so they're best for preserving hops but i don't know?

If a standard Foodsaver bag can maintain a vacuum in the freezer for a couple of years I'd say there really isn't any need to try using metalized mylar bags.

When my home grown hop harvest comes in I dump what's left of any two-season-back hops to make room in the freezer.
It's very rare that a bag has lost vacuum - it's happened only twice in four years (both were due to strigs stuck through the bag) and that's across ~20 pounds of dried cones.

That's good enough for me...

Cheers!

Hi arnobg, I'd recommend the Sinbo DZ-280 Vacuum Sealer.

I LOVE this Vacuum sealer. If mine broke today, I'd buy another. I've had it for about 2 years and couldn't be happier. When deciding on a Vacuum sealer, I picked this one after reading reviews and watching all the YouTube videos because I liked that it didn't require any "special" channel bags. I buy whatever bags that I'd like and know that they will work great. I like the snorkel feature (this type of sealer) for the versatility and great performance it gives. Highly recommend.

Can anyone recommend a specific FoodSaver model? Trying to decide between one of those and the Sinbo model that can do mylar bags.

All the FoodSaver models are nearly the same, the difference are the add-ons and additions - that don't affect how well they seal.
So, unless you actually want the extras, I'd look for the cheapest deal and get that model...

Cheers!

put the mylar bag inside the foodsaver bag
??????
profit

I actually do that with mine. I buy most of my hops from Yakima valley. I just shove the mylar bag into a food saver bag (with an oxygen absorber pack or two inside the mylar bag) and seal. No issues so far after a couple years.

i have one and it seals mylar very well. i buy the 3x3 bags foe electronics and have had no problems at all.

Thanks for the info. What size mylar bags do you use to bag up small amounts, I haven't found anything as small as the ones the hops normally come in.
