This could be potentially awesome news. In an effort to stimulate revenue, the USPS is considering allowing the shipment of beer, wine and liquor. The article says there would be different sized boxes and a flat rate to anywhere in the US.

Please excuse me if this has been posted elsewhere. Didn't see it in this forum.

It's been a few months, but it was brought up. I wish they'd just do it already.
It'd be funny to see the USPS with a beer delivery truck for our home brews. The yuppy neighbors might just think it's cool to do then...

If you're an AHA member, this is part of what your dues go for. The AHA has been talking to the USPS for a number of years. It's a painfully slow process.

Is this for home brewers or licensed brewers? Not sure if you realize but places like FedEx allow you to ship beer and wine, but only if you are licensed.

They were referring to home brewers the first time I read about this months ago. With 1M home brewers & counting in the US,the'd clean up catering to a basic need we have.

I saw it Friday morning on TV.

My guess is although it may be allowed, they will apply a surcharge to ship alcohol.

My understanding is that it's aimed at commercial breweries and we're trying to get homebrew tagged on. But I have only vague knowledge of the situation.

Well, you'd think so, but no. The AHA was talking to DHL about this at one point, but DHL was only interested in commercial shipping since they didn't see enough of a market with homebrewers.

Two of the big issues (other than a dumb outdated pre-prohibition law) is 1) underage people receiving and 2) some states don't allow out-of-state shipments of booze regardless of carrier.

well they were wrong then, weren't they!? The USPS would be able to crawl out of the hole with all our bottles going her there hither & yon. That fact alone cannot be denied. He who does is def narrow minded. Why do you think the AHA fights so hard for this??!:rockin:

Why would you want to use a service that uses a +/- 2 week window on deliveries and doesn't take care of their packages. Last ditch efforts to get out of a hole they happily dug for way too long.

Flat-rate (Priority) boxes are your friend. Typically, it's a 2-3 day delivery.

Their real problem is that, in 2006, Congress decided the USPS needed to pre-fund 75 years of retiree health benefits. Of course they can't turn a profit, paying for healthcare for people who haven't even been born, much less started working for them!

My guess is that this -- along with threatening to eliminate Saturday delivery or door-to-door service -- are bluffs to get Congress to relax the ludicrous 75-year-prefunding, a burden which no other government agency or private company has to struggle under.

MADD is against alcohol leaving a brewery ........ever. I dont think they really factor much anymore.

MADD has gone from being about drunk driving to new world neo-prohibitionists (sp?).

I don't know if anyone takes them seriously anymore, besides their own.

The bill would require that such shipments would have to comply with any state laws where the shipment originated and was delivered. The measure also said the recipient would have to be at least 21 years old and would need to provide valid, government-issued photo identification upon delivery.

God I ****ing hate living in one of those states...

My wife bought me a beer of the month subscription and it is shipped by UPS and they deliver and it says alcohol on the label and I have to show an ID to get the package so PA does allow shipping from outside states.

Mine arrived safely & illegaly through them. Outdated law I guess? Plus F that. Also BS in tha howuus?
