So, I recently acquired ;) two kegs. One is a 13 gallon, and the other is a 15 gallon. Both of them came directly from a bar once they had emptied them.

Although I am not currently in a position to use them as kegs - the in the traditional sense, I do want to incorporate them into my brewery. Here are my questions . . . if these questions have been asked, I would appreciate some reference to where I can find those threads.

1. How do I convert a keg into a brewing kettle? In other words, how do you cut the top off? How do you install the valve?

2. How can I turn one into a primary fermentation vessel?

Any help is appreciated.
 
Cutting the top off cleanly can only be done with a plasm torch. You can drill holes and cut around with a carbide blade, but this leaves a jagged edge that will cut just about anything it touches.
Valves are a little easier. You can actually cut a hole with a carbide drill bit and install a weldless valve. Personally, I'd have both done in a welding shop.

There's no good way to modify a keg for use as a fermenter.
 
Thanks! I feared that it was something I would have to have done in a welding shop. I wonder what kind of looks the guys in the welding shop will give me when i ask them to help me out. I've already got the guys down at my local ACE Hardware confused with all of the gear I buy there.

Oh well . . .

We have a welding shop in the school where I teach . . . but I can just imagine the students' reactions . . . :confused: ;) :rockin:
 
The keg I converted was cut off with a saw and then a grinder went to it to smooth the edges. For the valve, a section of threaded SS pipe was welded on, then drilled out, with the brass ball valve screwed on afterwards. I'm about to convert another the same way.
