Using fruit in a recipe

I have a few pear and apple trees in my yard. Has anyone brewed using pears or apples? I'm not a big fan of hard ciders, but would be interested in using pears or apples in a beer recipe. Or is that a stupid idea?

i've used lots of fruit in beers before, but never pears or apples - mostly because i feel you'd get more of a cider fell than a fruited beer.
