So I was cleaning a house out today...there was a lot of very expired food in the pantry. One item was a chocolate cake mix. Being a home brewer I started thinking about if you could add that to a stout.I did not save it but they are cheap and often BOGO at the grocery store. Ingredients must be like flour, sugar, chocolate, but what else? Anyone ever try it?

I’d be curious to see if any has tried this. I can see the thought process, but I have to wonder if the preservatives and such would cause an issue. Also, is there any sort of fat/oils in it that might kill head retention?

Well not sure if they are already in the mix. I have made some that had you add oil or eggs, wouldn't do that. Just use the dry mix.

You know, you can google this stuff...

Personally, if I wanted to add wheat flour and chocolate to a beer, I'd just use chocolate and wheat flour.

You could "clean" a stout’s flavor by adding chocolate cake mix in secondary fermentation. Use 1-2 cups per 5 gallons, and strain out any solids. For a cleaner chocolate taste, consider using cocoa powder or nibs.
