So, I'm pretty excited and had to share.

My first one gallon batch of cider is done! I used a gallon of Allen's canned apple juice and one packet of ec-1118.

My initial gravity was almost bang on 1.050 and my current gravity is a little below 1.00 (the writing on a hydrometer is TINY) looks to be around .998 to .995 range.

The ABV side of the hydrometer shows sightly above five on the initial reading and slightly below zero on the final. So I should be somewhere in the 5.5abv range I think.

I'm pretty excited.

If your readings are correct i think you are estimating a little low. And a FG of 0.995 is going to be pretty darned dry.

Quick and Dirty Alcohol estimate.

1.050 - 0.995 = 0.055 Gravity Drop

0.055 X 131 = 7.2% ABV (For the life of me can not remember how the 131 was derived as the constant.)

Having drank some I feel your math is likely more accurate than my estimate.

The cider isn't at all unpleasant, it tastes kind of like a moderate white wine with no sweetness. Not particularly flavorful but not at all unpleasant either.
