This coming weekend is thanksgiving here in Canada and we will be hosting a dinner. I will have my kegorator ready to go by then, but nothing ready to fill it with.

Would picking up a few growlers and using them to partially fill a corny keg work ok? Anything I would need to watch out for?

And since they are already carbonated, can I just set the kegorator to serving pressure and have it ready to go immediately after filling?

Basically, yes. I'd still fill it a few days in advance to regain any lost carbonation. Be sure to siphon (not pour) into the keg.

It seems like a lot of effort to 'just' be able to pour a beer from the tap. Where are the growlers coming from? Is it fully carbed homebrew, or being filled from a pub?

If you really want beer on tap, why not pick up a small keg from a commercial brewery.
