Total noob question

alright guys this may sound like a stupid question but i am a noob to all of this i have made a kt beer before went perfect i am now trying to make one of those vodka kits. Well the stupid question is that when i did the beer i used an airlock with no cover on the top, does it make a difference if u have a cover on the top of the airlock and if so what does it actualy do i seen loadsin photos but i never used it

The caps are not important if you have water in them, basically they're to keep flys out. I don't have a cap on my air lock
