does anyone know how much og you lose per gal of top off water?
I started with 3 gals for mash on :
1lb honey malt
1lb biscuit
10lbs 2 row pale malt
3 gals batch sparge
boil for 1 hr and only end up with 3 gals of 1.070 wort a
added 2 gals top water to bring back to 5 gals
the og dropped to 1.044
What am I doing wrong? I'm trying to stay up close to the 5 gal range upon completion and still have a higher og. Guess I need a bigger pot, huh?

1 gallon of 1.050 wort mixed with 1 gallon plain water will give you 2 gallons of 1.025 wort. what size is your pot? you mashed with 1 qt/lb, which is cool, but you're gonna lose half of that 3 gallons of mash water to grain absorption. add 3 gallons for sparge and you're only pulling 4.5 gallons for your boil. that's about what a mash looks like for a 3 gallon batch, probably with less grain though. from your recipe it looks like you're making a pale ale. 1.044 isn't so low. keep some light DME around.
