1) The Rev Horton Heat - Full Custom Gospel
Jim Horton has the biggest guitar in music
2) The Bloodhound Gang - One Fierce Beer Coaster
Juvinile, immature and stupid; How can you not love it?
3) Sublime - 40 oz to Freedom
A great musician cut short by drugs
4) Reel Big Fish - Turn The Radio Off
No explaination of this on, I just like it
5) Warren Zevon - Genius
It's all the Zevon you'll ever need, minus his final album

I thought about putting this on my list but decided it might not be 'obscure' enough. Great Album!

KMFDM- Angst

Good call. I was blasting ATTAK from my car earlier this week. I can't seem to get enough of Risen (track 10). I was pretty hooked on ADIOS when it first came out too.

Where's my CD's? I'm craving some KMFDM right now.

Thats great there are some Misfits fans here.
I was on holiday for over a week and couldnt post.
Unfortunately, after seeing Poison Idea on the Feel the Darkness LP tour (1989 or 90?), nothing else compares....I have seen the promised land in that album, and nothing elsereally measures up. I have found some decent bands/tunes albums since then....its like drinking great homebrew for years, and then having to switch back to some discount tallboys. But, tallboys are still beer, and sometimes one has to make due.

Iggy & The Stooges - Raw Power
Elliot Smith - XO
The Jesus & Mary Chain - Psychocandy
Joy Division - Closer
Operation Ivy - Energy

Ministry played here a couple of years ago and they were awesome.

Soul Coughing - Ruby Vroom
Aztec Camera - Stray
Heatmiser - Mic City Sons
Bright Eyes - I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning
Aimee Mann - Lost In Space

Nice one ultralord!

How about:

Hot Action Cop - Hot Action Cop

Great, now I have the feva for the flava...yO!
:drunk:

I remember when this album came out. "Screenwriter's Blues" was one of the most original-sounding songs I'd heard in a long time. Maybe it was just that time of life for me, but it seems there were a LOT of really, really good - original sounding - bands coming out around that time.

OMFG I'm so old - what about:

Nektar - Remember the Future
Rick Wakeman - Journey to the Center of the Earth
Tom Waits - Nighthawks at the Diner
Kraftwerk - Autobahn
Pink Floyd - Atom Heart Mother, or any other vinyl not getting airplay today

OK, so it's late 70's progrock - go ahead and start the old guy stuff.....

Skol!
I too am old.
I am going to recommend Colosseum Rock by Starz . . .

Cheesefood, good call on the Buju.
Alpha Blondy "Jerusalem" is another classic reggae album.
The Urge "Receiving the Gift of Flavor"--awesome horn section.
Bad Religion--didn't see anyone mention them yet.

I don't think my taste is very obscure but I'll go
Toots and the Maytals (best of)
Macc Lads (anything) do a youtube search unless your easilly offended
NOFX/Rancid (split)
COC (deliverance)
Screamin' Jay Hawkins (best of)

I usually just get songs - not whole albums

  1. Poi Dog Pondering - Wishing Like a Mountain and Thinking Like the Sea (but any of the older albums are great)
  2. Liquid Soul - Self Titled
  3. Cornershop - The one with Brimful of Asha

I gotta chime in, although I feel like since I'm a little younger the highly influential bands in my adolesence might not hold up to your standards, but here we go:

1.)Descendents-Milo Goes To College (I think I'm getting the cover art of this album tattooed on me)
2.)Descendents-ALL (the 2 albums really can't be compared its like night and day)
ALL-Breaking Things
3.)NOFX-Ribbed
4.)Dropkick Murphys-Do or Die
5.)Suicide Machines-Destruction by Definintion (Although I think A Match and Some Gasoline is better)

Without these 5 albums I wouldn't be who I am today, what can I say?

Only five eh?

1) The Lucksmiths - Warmer Corners
2) Voxtrot - Raised by Wolves
3) Belle & Sebastian - The Life Pursuit
4) The Dresden Dolls - Yes Virginia
5) The Magnetic Fields - 69 Love Songs

This will of course change by tomorrow! :ban:

Interesting call on the Decendents/All. I've been a fan of them for a dozen years, but I never thought I'd put one of their albums in a top 5. The only top 5 punk albums I can think of are "Give Me Convenience or Give Me Death" (Dead Kenedy's) or The Ramones (self-titled album).

I think I go with "Fresh Fruit For Rotting Vegetables" over "Convenience".

Agreed....their first was the best...and they could never re-capture an entire album like that again even though they still did make great songs scattered over another 10 or so years.

Cheers.

1. The Killers- Hot Fuss (I know, too easy)

2. Miles Davis Agharta/Pangea (that's actually four CD's right there, but all recorded on the same day.

3. The Go! Team- Thunder Lightening Strike

4. We Are Scientists- With Love and Squalor

5. Bright Eyes- Digital Ash in a Digital Urn

6. The Racontours- Broken Boy Soldier

I might be aging myself here but here are a few of my favs:
All time fave band BOC-All releases
Golden Earring...Huge catalog
Budgie-Brittania.......
Brain Surgeons...Malpractise
Blackmore's Night...
Head East...
Robin Trower....
Kraftwerk.....

Of course,I love the big acts too but I'm stuck in a classic rock loop.I've got my Sirius radio to keep the loop running.Check out channel 16 "The Vault" for classic obscurities.Rock On with beer!:rockin:

Captain Beefheart's Trout Mask Replica has been growing on me, and I'm having a Pixies resurgence lately. And, not an obscure band but an odd album - They Might Be Giant's Here Come The ABCs has been getting played for Miles a lot lately.

Love the Pixies AND my kids love They Might Be Giant's Here Come the ABCs.

It's some of the only kids music I can listen to without getting the urge to plunge the car into a pole.;)

Check out Ralph's World. It's the founder of The Bad Examples doing music that's appealing to adults and kids.

I'm bringing this thread back to life. I've just been getting into the Butthole Surfers, and man did I waste time by not getting into this band earlier. Just awesome stuff here folks. Locust Abortion Technician is a difficult album to get through, but Independent Worm Saloon or ElectricLarryLand are awesome. I need to get more.

Oh heck yeah! That's one Poi CD I don't have... so at this point I'm partial to Volo Volo. Saw them live during my college days. A FANTASTIC show.

cripes... I don't have my MP3 player with me at the moment.

One CD that comes to mind immediately is Shooter Jennings' "Put the O Back in Country."

My $.02

1. Tommy Bolin - Private Eyes

2. Spyro Gyra - Incognito

3. Billy Cobham - Spectrum

4. Jeff Beck Live With The Jan Hammer Group

5. Albert Collins, Robert Cray and Johnny Copeland - Showdown

Aw Heck - I like these too:

Jimmy Lee Robinson - Chicago Jump
Everything recorded by Robert Johnson

God, I feel old. But at least I like good music.

mad i'm so encouraged by some of these responses. off the top of my head, some repeats:

Built to Spill - Keep It Like a Secret
Pavement - Brighten the Corners
Tom Waits - Heartattack and Vine
Mountain - Nantucket Sleighride
Rentals - The Return of the Rentals
Shins - Oh, Inverted World!
Descendants - Milo Goes to College
Talking Heads - Remain in Light (maybe not obscure?)
Elliot Smith - Either/Or
Kinks - Village Green Preservation Society
Springsteen - Nebraska (NOT obscure artist, BEST album)
Stephen Malkmus - Face the Truth
Two Gallants - What the Toll Tells

.....i could go on all night.

Hrmm

Floyd-A Saucerful of Secrets
Morrison-An American Prayer
Heads-Fear of Music
Kesey-Acid Test
Laurie Anderson-Strange Angels

Anything by Zappa can pretty much be inserted, although I didn't care for him nearly as much.

I can't believe I haven't posted in this thread yet... I'm usually all over these music discussions. Of the top of my head:

Neil Young - Prairie Wind (video)
A word about this... I know he's not exactly an obscure artist but I'm not sure how many people realize that he continues to make great music. Go get his Heart of Gold DVD... it's one of the best concert movies I've ever seen, full of music from his Prairie Wind album.

The rest of these are bands that I have picked up on in the past year or two:
The Arcade Fire - Funeral ()
Bloc Party - Weekend in the City ()
The Decemberists - The Crane Wife ()

Prarie Wind is great stuff. I'd have to say, tho, that my favorite 'obscure' Neil Young has to be "Re-Ac-Tor".

I mean, c'mon, surfer Joe and Mo the Sleaze???! Neil's da man. My album count currently stands at 34. :D

I didn't read the whole thread but here is my $.02.

Tom Waits - Small Change
Faster *****cat- (self title)
AC/DC- anything early, before they packed stadiums
Prince- Diamonds and Pearls
N.W.A- Niggaz 4 Life
Suicidal Tendencies (pick one)

What an awesome thread.

1) KMFDM - Nihil
2) Future Sound of London - Lifeforms
3) Sneaker Pimps - Bloodsport
4) Gram Rabbit - Music to Start a Cult To
5) Spacetime Continuum - Alien Dreamtime

1. The Mountain Goats - All Hail West Texas
2. Pavement - Slanted and Enchanted
3. Dinosaur Jr. - You're Living all Over Me
4. Idlewild - 100 Broken Windows
5. Minus the Bear - Highly Refined Pirates

Some artists may be less obscure than others, but the albums are definitely not ones you're likely to find on the shelves of the local record chain:

Yes - Tales from Topographic Oceans
Donovan - Cosmic Wheels
Emerson Lake & Palmer - Brain Salad Surgery
The Crow: Salvation - Soundtrack
Dos Gringos - Live at the Sandtrap

I'm lazy and don't want to look at all 12 pages, but if anyone else listed these bands, well, you're :rockin: in my book.

-Gogol Bordello-Gypsy Punks

-Streetlight Manifesto-Everything Went Numb

-Bedouin Soundclash-Sounding a Mosaic

-Bad Manners-Rare and Fatty (I like their unreleased stuff more than their "hits")

-Operation Ivy-Energy
