Too much head???

My buddy and I were trying out his latest batch as mine is still fermenting. We realized that 3 of the 5 batches he's done in his Mr. Beer kit have had TONS of head, like 50-70% of the glass. Now I spent alot of years bar tending so it's not my pouring skills. The beer tastes fine. Any ideas why this would be or is it one of those questions that has many possibilities?
 
Have you let it bottle condition for a few weeks, and chill for a few days before drinking? It sounds like you're drinking it too soon
 
I ran into something similar with one of my pale ales and theorized that it was a combination of two things:

1. I didn't let my beer finish fermenting in primary before bottling;
2. Adding priming sugar (honey in my case) prior to the completion of fermentation at the time of bottling.

Combine additional sugars and the unfermented sugars in the bottle and I got an over carbonated pale ale.

Just my thoughts on something I've deduced from my own brews.

As for your beer, I would guess it is either over carbonation and/or not allowing it to chill completely before serving. The other possibility that goes along with overcarbonation is possible infection, but since you said the beer tastes fine, that's probably not the case.
 
I for one LOVE head ;)


Seriously though, I personally try to pour my beer to generate as much head as possible...if there is less than an inch of foam in my glass...its not beer. I don't know if i would want 50% but the way I pour generates about 30% foam in my glass...I love watching it sink down and the lace it creates
