Hi all, first post here. Been reading a ton and quickly becoming addicted to the hobby. At any rate, already messed up in my first attempt at an all grain batch. I wanted to try a Sierra Nevada Clone using the recipe below. I had to order grains in 1 pound increments and i asked to have them crushed. They came all in the same bag... so thats ~17% crystal, i assume too much? Should i increase 2 Row and hops to compensate or might it turn out okay? Brewing in keggles so i can do a larger batch, but really didnt want to for my first go. Any help would be appreicated.
thanks!

All Grain Recipe - Sierra Nevada Pale Ale Clone ::: 1.052/1.012 (5.5 Gal)
Grain Bill (70% Efficiency assumed)

10 lbs. - 2 Row Pale Malt
1.25 lbs. - Crystal Malt (60L)
Hop Schedule (33 IBU)

1/3 oz. - Magnum - 60 min.
1/2 oz. - Perle - 30 min.
1 oz. - Cascade - 10 min.
2 oz. - Cascade - at flameout
Yeast

White Labs California Ale Yeast (WLP001) - 1800 ml starter
Mash/Sparge/Boil

Mash at 153° for 60 min.
Sparge as usual
Cool and ferment at 65° to 68°

It might be sweet, it might not.....
Yeah, throw another pound of 2-row in if you want to "dilute" the influence of the C60. Otherwise, you can just mash really low like 148 to dry it out.

You used 2 pounds of crystal, instead of 1 pound? or the 1.25 pound listed in the recipe?

If it's 10 pounds of two-row, and 2 pounds of crystal, that's 16% crystal malt (12 pounds of grain), if that's what you have.

It's still too much, but you could either use more two-row, and then not use all of the grain (say, but four pounds of two-row, and take out four pounds of your already mixed grains). But it would probably be easiest to mash at a low temperature, make sure to use a very attenuative yeast, and to add more hops for balance. It can then be an American amber, instead of a pale ale.

Hehe, you posted before i could go back and change my percentage... and i minored in math :). Okay, thanks for the ideas!

I already have enough hops to do the bigger batch size... i would just have to buy more two row. Looks like it would be around 8.8 gallons if i did the following

16 pounds 2 row
2 pounds 60l

.5 oz magnum
.8 oz perle
1.6 oz cascade
3.2 oz cascade

I have a round igloo with a manifold, do you think 18 pounds of grain would be too much for my first time doing this?

Sounds like a good chance to learn to fly sparge with that much grain in a 10 gallon cooler tun and maybe experiment with some dry hopping in the second smaller batch. You'll have a built in control batch. Or, depending on your efficiency, make a party-gyle. The sky's the limit with this hobby.
