I have broken the tip off of 3 old screwdrivers trying to remove the spring. Any helpful tips, barring the purchase of a $75 spear removal tool?

Look on line at a spear removal tool. Then grind one of your broken screw drivers to look like that. Grind slowly don't heat it up until it is red. Keep bucket of water close and soak it to cool down often. Once done the end should look kinda like 1/2 of a U. Don't make the tip sharp just narrow.
Know look at the spring. Find the beginning of it and insert the screwdriver with the point behind the beginning of the spear. You should then be able to pry the spring out a little at a time. (may need a hammer to get it started)
Hope this helps:)

I appreciate the detailed response, but this is the only sanke removal tool I am aware of.

Not sure how to grind a screwdriver to look like this...

edit: Ok, wait I think I just got what you're saying. Grind out the tip of the screw driver to match the notch on the spring clip. I'll try when I get home from work. Thanks.
