This was an issue while I was making my first batch, I would put the spoon down and it would touch something so I would end up throwing it back in my bucket of solution to sanitize it. How do you guys handle this, is it best to just make a bucket and leave your stuff in there? Does it hurt to let it soak in there? How about sealing it up with spoons and testing equipment so in a couple weeks I don't need to make a new batch to do my OG tests?

The only things you need to really think about are items that touch your wort after its cooled. After that, maybe the hydrometer to test gravity. And finally the hoses and bottle filler.... I dont recall a spoon touching my wort anywhere in there.

i pour the sanitizing solution from my fermenter into a spare 5gal paint bucket (about 2-3 gallons) shortly before i get ready to use the ale pail fermenter

i then keep my thermometer, hydrometer, turkey baster, spoons, air lock etc and mesh strainer in that bucket until i need them and am done brewing

the only possible concerns are that iodophor will discolor light colored plastic but none of my equipment is effected by that

i also like to fill up a spray bottle as well which makes it handy to sanitize other misc things if necessary

the dilution usually only lasts a day or so IME not sure if it would last longer if it was sealed up completely

First note- as far as sanitizers go, I am assuming you are not using bleach, and have learned from this forum the value of using things like StarSan.

As said above, if it is going into the boil then you don't have to sanitize things. Filth is the real issue, like if the spoon got in dirt or last night's marinara sauce spill on the kitchen counter.

For storage, just clean the items, store like you would anything used for a kitchen (away so it doesn't get dirty, but not paranoid sealing), and then just sanitize the next time you are going to use it. I only let things soak when I am brewing or bottling, like a bottling wand before I actually attach it or the siphon tubing.

If you want to set something down and keep it sanitized, get a piece of aluminum foil, give it a quick wash or spray with your sanitizer, and use that as a surface to put things on.

If you just don;t want to be mixing up sanitizer over and over again, then fill a spray bottle with your sanitizer (again, assuming StarSan or similar), and keep that with your brew stuff. A couple spritzes and you are good to go!
