Haha, it was a complete shot in the dark. It's 8:24 AM here and I'm at work, but I'll try to get one up tonight. My wife and I went to see the guy who catered our wedding, and he wouldn't let me out of the door without draining a Chouffe blonde and taking another brew for the road.

I bought a bottle of Samuel Smith's Organic Chocolate Stout in the same purchase as this bottle (at the only good bottle shop I know in Wuhan), but it was used as a prop by our wedding photographers and never returned, along with a Nøgne Ø Imperial Brown Ale that cost me $11.

But negative on brew and style.

The name's descriptive but not literal.

Viscous as used 10W30, black as a coal mine, with a dark, roasty bitterness complemented by some dark fruit flavors and not offset by the even tiniest modicum of sweetness. My first sip made me laugh out loud at how great the name is. It's hard to imagine a more apt name for this stuff than "Old Engine Oil".

Apologies for hijacking the thread for a couple days - I kind've thought there would be more activity, which would facilitate a faster pace of hints. I also expected to be narrowed down to porter pretty quickly.

That same beer shop has the whole Ola Dubh line and at least one other Harviestoun beer. After that positive experience with Old Engine Oil, I'll probably give Ola Dubh a try next time I find myself on the other side of the river. I was going to chastise you for forgetting the first clue about the fitting name, but I see that Ola Dubh means "Black Oil", so I'll assume it's a good descriptor for the beer in those bottles as well.

Edit - I see from browsing their site (beer porn) that Ola Dubh actually is a variant of Old Engine Oil with a higher ABV and aged in Scotch barrels. Now I have to try it!

You should definitely try them. I did a little side by side tasting of the 12 and 16 a while back. They were both great, but the 16 was my favorite of the two.
