Hey guys,
I was wondering if anybody has ever tried putting a sanke at a slight angle and building some sort of shelf to hold it in place that way (I guess picture a keg on legs that looks like small cement mixer) and then use it as a single stage fermenter.
I would assume that, just like the conicals, you would then have a better angle (one bottom edge of the keg would be pointing toward the ground) to collect trub and all else that falls from suspension. You could also install a nipple in that area to dump from the bottom, plus another valve for sampling.
Do any of you see a downside to this idea? Have any of you heard of doing this before? I scoured these and other forums to no avail and am clueless as to why no one does it. I'm beginning to wonder if I've overlooked a major flaw in this concept that everyone else has already encountered...?
Off the top of my head I can think of only a few issues that would make this less than ideal:
-At an angle, the volume of your beer would slightly suffer (although for a 10Gal batch in a half barrel I doubt very much).
-Krausen may be an issue on one of the sides with the less headspace (but again, if only making 10Gal batches..?).
-Thermal convection may go weird on you, as the symmetry of a conical is uniform and a tilted keg is not, although I doubt it would be very bad.
-Blow off ports, racking canes, anything other than moving the beer under pressure may be a bit "off" as it would all be at an angle.
Anyway, this is my first post after having read the forums for quite some time now. Any feedback, ideas, or info regarding current setups similar to this idea would be greatly received!
