So I had my first batch in the primary for about a week then in a secondary for about 5 weeks. Its a simple begineers IPA so the recipe is pretty simple.

Well anyways, I wanted to bottle at first, but then I ended up getting all my kegging equipment. I am kegging right now to be exact.

My question is, my first batch, brewed about 6 weeks ago, is already very carbonated. I tried taking a FG reading but cant because the carbonation. Is this possible? If so, should I just keg, chill and drink?

It seems carbonated in the carboy? It can have a few bubbles, as a product of fermentation is co2, but if you have an airlock on it, much of the c02 goes out. It's still bubbly, but not like full carbonation.

If you made your first batch 6 weeks ago, I'm amazed it's not long bottled, and drank. But if it's still in the carboy, go ahead and keg it.

Fermentation creates CO2 which will stay in solution to a certain degree. It isn't fully carbonated at this point so keg it, blast it with some gas and in a few days to a week start enjoying! :drunk:

When I took a sample for the FG reading, it was like it was a fresh cracked beer, thats how carbonated I am talking here. Anyways, I just legged it, purged the o2 and its now sitting at 30 psi for the next 24 hours.

Did you have an airlock of some sort on your fermentation vessel (FV)? Are you sure fermentation was finished (I'd be shocked if it wasn't after six weeks)?

What was your FV (carboy, better bottle, bucket, etc)? At what point in the process did you find the beer carbonated (ie, upon opening the FV? or after racking to secondary/bottling bucket/keg?). Ate you sure you just didn't introduce a bunch of oxygen when racking?

I'm fairly new at this (12 batches) but once fermentation is finished your concoction should be FLAT, warm beer.
