So I just made my first batch (extract). Its sitting in the closet now with a fermometer.

BUT

When I started I went to Walmart and bought a probe thermometer

This one:

I think I did ok with my steep because it stayed in the 150s and I seemed to be able to hold that temp pretty easily. But then it just decided to stop working while chilling my wort. Temps were all over the place and even went UP when I took it out.

Anyhoo, guess I am buying another or several more thermometers for my new hobby.

What do you guys use/suggest. I thought the probe would be a good multitasker to do the steep, chill, and fermentation but maybe not.

New probe style? Something else? Or do I need separate ones for different stages?

the Taylors are good - because they are cheap, and you can find them in most Target stores

But if you get the end of the probe - where it meets the wire mess - wet
They stop working.....

Go for the floating glass type

my 2 cents

Well, that explains alot.

Luckily I bought it at Walmart, so I will just practice my "I dunno why it wont work" face.

I bought a floating glass one from NB and it is off by around 6 or 7 degrees. And no way to calibrate. Boo.

I have several floating thermometers and just found that one is off. But all of the others all read the same (3 out of 4).
