So I hosted a brew together back in January at my place. a few folks showed up, and we had a great time. Then a few weeks go by and I notice somethings missing!!! WTF! Someone stole my DDBC glass that Jester sent me after 07 Secret Santa Swap (Yes remember the Red photos ... those were MY bottles :D) Anyway, Jester and Red sent me a glass, and it was one of my favorites. Now it's gone.

I waited for a while before posting this, because I'm prone to misplacing things from time to time. I've cleaned the garage (where it would be) I've looked everywhere else... yup it's gone. Last time I remember it? the brewday.

I just think it's sad... I open my home to you, I introduce my friends to you, I befriend you... and you repay me how?

I hope I'm wrong and I just misplaced it... but there's only so many places a glass can hide.

You would think that, but they actually have tiny little legs, allowing them to be misplaced for years because they're constantly moving around. That's what I tell myself, anyway, when I clean the closet for the fifteenth time and find things that I couldn't possibly have missed.

So how does one punish said thief?

Go to their place, find a carboy and piss in their beer?

Though then again... the beer gods will take care of them... I forsee many unwanted infections in their brews - exploding carboys, spilled wort, and stuck sparges.

Bastards. Stealing from a fellow homebrewer.

Bastards.

Don't invite them back. It's that simple. If they apologize and fix the situation, they get another chance. If they cross the line again, they are on the bad list forever.

I also hope it just a matter of misplacing, but I continue to be surprised by what people will do (and that goes double when a bit of booze gets into the mix - which is no excuse).

Hopefully it will turn up and your faith in humanity will be restored.

Not for fear of theft, but when I have a party I break out the nice, generic beer glasses and hide my sentimental inventory so none get lost or broken.

You'd really invite someone back after they stole from you? Apology or no apology, they are done to me... if he or she wanted to do the right thing and return the glass to clear his or her conscience, then great, still I could never forgive someone who stole from me.

Meh, people do stupid stuff...especially when drunk. If they felt bad about it and brought it back then they would be alright in my book...repeat offenses notwithstanding.

Consider this, however: What if someone accidentally BROKE your glass and cleaned it up, then didn't mention it because they were ashamed? eh? :p

There are just so many possibilities...I often find that "someone stole it" is usually the incorrect assumption.

Besides, how are you possibly going to know who it is?

Yea, it's looking more and more like this is a wise policy...

You live in MN.

Don't you have to wait until spring thaw to rule out theft.

Yea, there is that... however, it's actually 46 F RIGHT NOW! and raining.... don't that beat all? Hope my hops don't wake up yet... plenty of cold left to go.

But, on your advise, I did take a stroll about the grounds on perpetuity.

So john did this glass appear in any of the afore mentioned pictures? Like in the background or something...I'm thinking that we might need to look at those pictures again, so we *ahem* can make a proper identification of said glaas, in case we come upon it again.

:D

I went looking through what I had to see if anyone was drinking out of it... couldn't see it though, I'll have to have Slnies look through his **** too.

No doubt it sucks if it was taken. That should not happen. But, we all know it does. The world just has these crappy flaws and most of them have two legs. It is easy for me to say, but mourn the glass but keep the open and engaging spirit. In the end isn't it more about how you choose to live, then how others do?

The notion of karma I like is not that you get what you deserve, but rather we end up living in the reality we create: If you are a thief you believe everyone is a thief and so you live in a world of thieves. I guess I no I have flaws and so I live in a flawed world. I also hope to get better and I think most everyone else does too.

I am probably wrong about this, but it is 10:30 pm, so who cares?!

PM me and I will send you a nice replacement.

Well, big dog! I just went through all the pictures that I have, and I have nothing. I have one pic of you and the wife, but you are not holding the said glass. That was early in the day. All of the rest of the pic with the exception of you in front of our rigs, do not contain a whole lot of back ground. The glasses that every one else are holding are either mugs or the clear shakers. I do not have any pics of or newest guest, but then that doesn't mean a whole lot either.

For the rest, I will say that I am quit disappointed in the theft myself. John, Nick and I have been brewing together since John and I got home from Iraq and we have never had issues with missing items. In fact last year when John hosted the brew together nothing went amiss. So I will confess that I did not even think, our event would fall subject to a theft. We all realize that in the grand scheme of things that the glass was not worth much, but it is the principle of the whole affair that erks a guy. That doesn't even take into account the whole value of sentiment that we attach to items because of the memories that we associate with them. John, with out his glass would be a naked John indeed. All kidding aside, it is not cool. well that is enough of my ramblings for tonight. S.

I really appreciate the "out pouring of support" from everyone. I guess after reading some of these posts I feel a little silly. It's a glass, that's all. I was more upset with the idea that someone I invited into my home had intended to do me harm.

I'm not going to go down the road of canceling the brewday, or restricting the event to people I know well... the idea of the brewday is to get to know more brewers.

I'll be like any person who values their possessions, they take steps to ensure their security.

BP - Thanks for the offer of a new glass, I'm always looking for a new one, but I've already put another order in with Jester to replace the one I had lost.

Now if you just want to send me a beer glass for the sake of sending me one........

You do in Tahoe... ;)
I LOL'd anyway.
No, not about the glass. +1 on the alternative ending for your poor glass (R.I.P.). I'll drink to it where ever it is! Not that I need a reason but a toast is a darn goodun! :D

Yep. People make mistakes, and I was raised to forgive someone who sincerely asked for it and made reparations. However, one who repeats the offense must climb a much, much higher mountain to receive the same forgiveness.

PS. I have an alibi! I was home, you can ask my wife! ;)
Although... we'll be in Houston this weekend to help our son celebrate his 21st Bday.
