It’s rotting on the shelves in Chicago. Not sure why they think they’ll do well up here.

well, Chicago

those people turn on beer a week after it debuts. i'd be shocked if they were still buying Bell's, Founders or Sierra Nevada.

Also, they overplayed the "We don't have any beer so you get what you get" game. I stopped ordering months ago because i just stopped caring about being told "Yeah i don't what they're sending." by the wholesaler
And that’s a damn shame.

False scarcity!?! From a brewery?!? Nooooo

I don't think it's false: they definitely didn't have the supply to meet the demand to start. Probably still don't, but you'd never know it. They half-assed the market....no rep presence, no definitive release schedule of what was coming to the market, sending minute amounts of the coveted stuff (Lunch etc) and infrequently over-sending the good stuff no one bought (Mean Old Tom etc.) I also think they were hampered by a wholesaler bursting at the seams with suppliers.

So sadly, not many care.

While I love all these breweries.... there is really no need to buy them with all of our great local products.
Competition has increased tenfold.
.... and Maine brewing - who makes what, like two styles of beer? I cant think of any reasons to bother with their beer.

i'm fascinated by this.

10-15 years ago we would have killed for this many options. we traded cross country to try Pelican, Saranac, Lost Abbey, Founders, etc. now we have them and the hardcore fans who lamented lack of access just a few years ago turned to "buy local" almost exclusively.

Welcome to my Hell part 2: electric boogaloo:

Awesome, you should try the Saison d’Erpe Mere from this tiny town in...
“Is it dry hopped?”
...no

was thinking of you when i made that post

how difficult has it been to keep up with the incredible pace at which the hardcore beer nerds change their minds? beer popularity has a shelf life of.... days? it feels like.

breweries are popular for a couple months... maybe? the new hot breweries that people are clamoring for, they hate 2 months later.

the "old" stalwarts like Bell's, Founders, etc. are regularly being slagged for being boring (Breakfast Stout, maybe All Day, Expedition, exceptions). or when cranking out a new beer "trying too hard" and failing.

how the hell do you choose what to order? what voodoo are you using to stay on top?

I can't totally speak for vav's mentality, but while some beer retailers are looking for the flavor of the week, Adam has been singing the praises of the classics like Orval / Saison Dupont for years. Publican O'Hare was fascinating to see all sorts of people with all sorts of different knowledge levels of beer ordering these things which I would have assumed only seasoned beer folk would order.

Krombacher Pils, Andescher Weissbier, Old Rasputin aren't exactly "cutting edge", but they are all really good examples of classic styles that folks will drink when fresh and served properly. Mix in a few other "new" things and you have a beer list that pleases all people.

No need with Afterthought brewing so close to home <3
;)
furley FBS on Nitro this year was a nice addition to the kegged options, I enjoyed it. Same with their Sumatra Brown.

There is no replacing the classics. They will always have a spot for me. At least when it comes to pils, german lager, etc Hard to beat those examples. However, Tooth and Claw is my consistent go to.... vav is that dryhopped?

Very difficult. I do have the luxury of buying for multiple concepts tho, so if something doesn't fit in one place, it will usually fit somewhere else. Publican is super classic/trappist/core brand/special exclusive kinda stuff, Anker is like its kid brother, and O'Hare is a cross between a Chicago best-of, solid beers, and Publican classics like Orval and the like. PQM is almost exclusively local beers.

Das it mane. Although i've tried pretty hard keeping the internet beer sites from finding out about the Cantillon, so thanks for that :p

John says yes it's dry hopped.

Also, i can't tell you how gratifying it is to see Orval enjoyed in a ******* airport. It's insane and i cry a little happy tear each time one sells.

Been a minute since I've seen oude orval on a menu. I feel like I've asked you this before, but oude is just a prior vintage that has been cellared and released in a later year correct? I feel like it's for 2 years, but I could be completely wrong.

Orval is considered Oude when it's over a year old, 18 months is when i try to do it (although the Oude i have now is about 14 months...it's been forever since i've had it on and i couldn't wait.) The importer holds back cases to sell later as Oude, as do some accounts.

Save a bottle of that 3F until next Saturday for me :D

Celebrating my birthday at the Publican with all the food and lambic.

do you want me to get hammered at O'Hare? because this is how you get me to get hammered at O'Hare.

responsibly hammered, of course

The biggest issue with your O'Hare spot is how ******* long I usually have to walk to drink 2-3 Orvals before walking allllll the way back to my gate.

Also: **** O'Hare. Open another spot at Midway, will ya'?

RE: Maine... A trip to Portland about 7 years ago opened my eyes to them and I excitedly bought a lot of their stuff when it entered the Chicago market. But the price point and lack of fresh bottles killed that excitement very quickly. Luckily, my local drinking hole almost always has a keg of their stuff on. Just this weekend, I greatly enjoyed a pint of Peeper.

By the way, one of the biggest negatives about the insane expansion of distribution in Chicago in the last few of years is that it has almost completely ruined my excitement to be in a Wisconsin liquor store. Nearly every option that used to be available up north but not in Chicago (Alesmith, Epic, Stone way back in the day, etc.) now rots on Chicago shelves. I'm not going to complain about buying NG stuff almost exclusively now, but it's not nearly as fun as it used to be...

I know right. Excite for Big and Littles Midway, tho.

It's about time for a new four pack of barrel aged beer, don't you think?
This was a fun one to work on, and we are very excited to let everyone know, the newest beer for our barrel aged four pack lineup is Rum Barrel Coconut Porter!
Distribution on this one is limited, and starts next Monday, February 19, so grab it when you see it, it'll be gone quick!
This beer is rum forward, with just a hint of coconut balanced out by the imperial porter base, a perfect beer as this long winter slowly melts away!

This beer was a hot mess at the Anniversary Party.
