Hello Texas! I'm coming to Austin for a music fest on Jan 5-8. I've been to Austin 3 times over the past 6 years but have yet to drag my ass out to Jester King (usually due to lack of car/time) Whats the best way for a tourist to get out there so I can drink some delicious beers/would you like to go to Jester King with me/show me more breweries other than Jester King.

I dunno, from the avatar picture, you look a little young to get in.

According a tweet I saw from the brewery when someone asked on a Facebook post (so 100% reliable right?)... Yes.

Anything worth checking out in Houston? Not much mention in this thread. I'm heading there for some meetings the next couple days. Today and maybe later Wednesday evening are the only times I'll be free to explore a bit on my own. TIA.

It's a city with a metro population of like 6.5 million. Of course there's things worth checking out.

More on what area of the city you're in, what you're looking for, etc.

Well, I thought breweries would be implied on a beer forum. I'm flying into Hobby and staying in Sugarland/MC area, but I'm mobile.

Karbach has a really pretty new taproom and restaurant (the restaurant is a bit pricey, but pretty good food). Uh, they're owned by ABi now, if you care about that sort of thing. Beer is still good tho.

8th Wonder has a fantastic taproom and you need to go just for Rocket Fuel, their vietnamese coffee porter. If you're into baseball, the entire place is themed after the Astrodome (which is right in the same neighborhood)

If you're more adventureous, there's Lone Pint (who make prolly the best IPA in Texas) and B52 Brewing to the north of the city. LP is only open on Saturdays, iirc. These are both gonna be about 50 miles to your north in Sugarland.

Also some breweries I keep meaning to go to, but haven't yet:
-Saint Arnold Brewing (I know! I keep forgetting this place doesn't have evening hours)
-Brash Brewing

... ... ... or you could just skip their breweries and come to the brewery capital of the Southwest, Austin. ;)

I wish, still have never been there.

So I guess the next question is Gatlin's/Karbach or Jackson St/8th Wonder when I land?

Pretty much this. Sugarland is kinda barren for decent options for breweries specifically.

Brash is rad though. If you're into the Metal and Simpsons.

If you go to Gatlin's it's right around the corner from Petrol Station. Great little tap room in an old gas station. Crazy ******* awesome burgers too. That Rancor life.

8th wonder is a great spot to hang but personally I think their beers are hot garbage.

If you're looking for good bbq in the city, The Pit Room (lunch only.. till they run out) is newish and super legit. That's over in Montrose though. So while you're over there check out Hay Merchant (bar) / Underbelly (restaurant that splits a building with Hay Merchant... really good "small plates" style fusion of the locale fares) or D&Q if you want a bottle shop. If you're in any way hungry that's close to Fat Bao too, which I love. There's a SL fat bao too.. the lunch special with 2 baos and bulgogi fries gets me right.

edit: looks like the pit room is open for dinner now too... maybe?

For Houston, there isn't too much in the way of good beer in Sugar Land (where I work so I'm out here all the time). There is always the chain beer-hall that is Flying Saucer, which is consistently decent and not much more. Right across from them is Guru Burger, which has decent offerings and good burgers. Sometimes they have cool tap nights from local breweries that could be worth checking out.

If you can, go to St Arnold for their pub lunch. Food is pretty good, and the beer is always solid. Nothing too showy, but solid nonetheless. If you're here Thursday-Sunday, go to Brash if you like stouts/IPAs. Their IPAs get a lot of fan-fare around Houston (I personally think they're a bit too bitter, but then again Brash would probably consider me a pussy).

For decent tap selections, Hay Merchant and Axelrad are cool options. One of my favorites in town is Petrol Station for food and draught. Again, most of these are hoofing it from Sugar Land.

D&Q is the best beer shop experience in Houston. Brandon is super knowledgeable and doesn't oversell anything. I'd suggest stopping in and taking a look around.

When will you be here through?

Leaving midday Thursday.

Thanks for the recs. Will be doing predetermined stuff with work people most of the time so I should be covered for the free time I'll actually get.
