Yep!

I haven't. Is it SD Beer Friends bad? Or Stephen Body good?

Lets say the first one. I got sucked into it. I feel ashamed.
The first one for sure. The SD Tourism Authority (the dudes what own sanduego.org) commissioned a brewery to create an "Official Beer of San Diego."

The brewery? Bay City. Who? Exactly. They made a session IPA.

The Brewers Guild is pissed because they were never consulted on the choice. Clearly it was a "I know someone" sorta deal.

The funniest part was that it was intended to be a perfect introduction to the San Diego beer scene for tourists...which doesn't make sense because Stone has had a monopoly on those forever.

My personal opinion? The official San Diego beer should be Aurora Hoppyalis.

My personal opinion...an IPA from one of the big guys that has a name outside of this city/state. Karl Strauss, Stone, Green Flash, Alpine (courtesy of GF extending their name), Alesmith.

When I think San Diego, I don't think session ipa...also Bay City reminds me of SF, not SD.

Ballast Point? Sculpin?

Granted, ask 10 beer geeks this question, and you might get 10 different answers.

I would happily entertain arguments for all of the following:
Alesmith IPA
Alpine Nelson
Ballast Point Sculpun
Green Flash West Coast IPA
Karl Strauss Aurora Hoppyalis
Pizza Port Swami's
Port Mongo or Wipeout
Stone IPA

I would have suggested that as well, but my choices were trying to remain within the rules of Brewers Guild. As such, Ballast wouldn't be considered, but it is definitely widely known.

I secured one and my better half secured a second for me. 40 hands, here we go.

Got 1 for each of us as well, but we'd never do that. I would never ever chug. 40 hands with me would be a long romantic embrace for probably 2 hours. Plus, the duct tape would really hurt coming off my hairy arms.

Regarding official SD beer, probably OG Alpine Nelson would make the most sense given its universal love. Does the official SD beer need to still exist?

Hmm.... think it's going to be a **** show at AleSmith on Saturday? I didn't get a 40 but was thinking of going.

I got a 40 and I'm not going near the place. Have you read the FAQ they had to post? It's going to be the shittiest of shows I'd imagine.

You piqued my curiosity so I skimmed the FAQ real quick.
Umm...

That's one of my main gripes too - people don't need an official SD beer to visit SD for beer these days. It's at least 5 years too late.

Agreed. Big meh for me on that story. Good for Bay City for having the initiative to get it done is my only takeaway.

What does it say?

Basically they are expecting a large party because Bud and Opie will be there. They are making it a 21 and up event. A good portion of the parking lot will be cut off for the event, so even more limited parking (since UCSD are ******** and won't work with them during off hours). But specifically...

SUBLIME RELEASE PARTY QUESTIONS:

  • Where is your brewery and the event venue located?
    • We are located at: 9990 AleSmith Court, San Diego, CA 92126
  • Where can I park my vehicle?
    • You are welcome to park in available spots at our brewery address. However, a good portion of this event will extend into our parking lot severely cutting down our capacity for vehicles. We will have event staff on-hand to help direct parking traffic. Parking will be extremely limited, so we highly recommend carpooling or using alternative methods of travel such as ride-sharing services like Lyft.
  • Do I need a ticket to attend the release party at the brewery on July 15th?
    • The release party is free of charge. There are no tickets required to be in attendance. We are expecting a large crowd. As such, we are subject to capacity limits in accordance to Fire Marshall code.
  • How old do you have to be to attend the event? Can I bring my children?
    • On a normal day at AleSmith Brewing Co., we are a family friendly establishment with all ages welcome. However, the Sublime Release Party will be a special event. We will be checking IDs and providing wristbands to guests 21 years of age and up upon entry into the event space. We will not ban underage guests from entry into the event though. Due to the nature of the event and the amount of people expected, we highly recommend NOT bringing any minors.
  • I struck out on the online bottle sale and wasn’t able to buy my 40 oz. bottle, am I still able to attend the Sublime Release Party?
    • Yes, all are welcome to attend regardless of whether or not you were able to buy a 40 oz. bottle. We do plan to bottle more 40 oz. bottles in 2018. In the meantime, we will have the beer available on draft and in 12 oz. cans as early as mid-August in SoCal. Distribution of draft and cans scheduled for mid-August to September in 18 states.
  • What time does the Sublime Release Party start?
    • The event is scheduled to start at 5 p.m. on Saturday, July 15 and end at 8 p.m..
  • I see that you open for business at 11 a.m. on July 15. Can I pick up my bottle when you open or do I need to wait until a certain time?
    • Sublime wanted fans in attendance to try the beer for the first time with them. As such, bottle pickup has been pushed back to 4:30 p.m. to allow for event-goers to pick up bottles and enjoy the night’s festivities. However, we must remind all our guests that the 40 oz. bottles are not allowed to be consumed on site. THEY MUST BE TAKEN HOME for consumption. Any bottles opened for consumption on site will be subject to forfeiture in accordance to ABC laws.
  • If I can’t crack open my bottle during the release party, how will I be able to enjoy AleSmith Sublime Mexican Lager during the event?
    • We will be serving AleSmith Sublime Mexican Lager on draft during the event. In order to streamline things and cut down wait times in lines, we will presell general beer tickets at numerous locations within the event space. PLEASE NOTE: PURCHASING A BEER TICKET DOES NOT GUARANTEE YOU A POUR OF ALESMITH SUBLIME MEXICAN LAGER DURING THE EVENT. Due to the popularity of the beer that night, we cannot guarantee everyone will get a pour. We’ll have plenty on tap for sure, but once our kegs of AleSmith Sublime Mexican Lager kick there’s no more beer left until we brew more.
  • For the poster signing, will Bud and Opie sign additional items?
    • This one is a difficult question to answer. Both Bud and Opie are definitely doing the signing session as a display of appreciation for their fans. They would like to be able to provide as many fans with signed posters as much as possible. However, their schedule only permits a one hour session. Depending on the crowd that day, band management will make the executive decision on whether or not up to ONE ADDITIONAL ITEM may get signed. Everyone that successfully waits in line and gets to the signing table before the line gets capped will at least receive a signed poster.
  • Will you be selling other Sublime merchandise during the event?
    • Yes, we will be selling shirts, pint glasses, and stickers featuring the AleSmith Sublime Mexican Lager branding.

I might cruise over close to last call just to pick up the bottles and the bottle and glassware I am proxying for.

Or at least drive by to see what the situation is.

Tl;Dr after this weekend, we will probably never do one of these again

If ya'll want a real "Sublime beer" I just blended the beer Alpine did for Beerfish with Bad Boy. Oviously it's called Bad Fish. Have fun with a brewery with packaging issues that beer gunned those 40s duck taped to your hands.
Damn, that's some unexpected sass coming from you.

While we're on the topic, anyone's Logical Choice cans pop open in this heat? I drank all of mine too fast, but unfortunately did not drink all my Rumskulls, which are apparently well on their way to being infected :(

Just some good natured fun.

But for real I still have yet to find a brewery that had beers blend together better than Alpine.

Ok maybe not all good natured fun. Have fun with them Blichmann 40's

I dreamt on Sunday of the time I went beerless for a month and ended it with a trip to the pub and a pint of OG Nelson. Woke up super depressed.

LOL is this for real? Wtf? Does the band not know that you can't open your 40 on premises?

Not sure infection is the right word for this. Unwanted flavors developed due to the rum barrels that were used maybe...but that isn't technically an infection.
