But is there a good reason to bail out? I'm not sure if I see a reason yet.
I honestly feel like there's less and less of a reason to "talk beer" lately - I'd personally just rather drink it and appreciate it, rather than criticizing every single stupid thing about it.

I mean, unless it's super juicy - I'm looking at you, Reckless.

With that said, I'm finally catching up on this thread and re: Benchmark, I really am super-bummed - mainly because it's always sad to see great breweries close, but also because I'm guilty of not giving them a fair shake.

I honestly think if they opened now, rather than a few years ago, they would have probably sustained more success. You look at Eppig and how well they seem to be doing, and it's kind of sad that Benchmark didn't enjoy the same success despite having a similar philosophy.

But I mean, that kind of goes hand in hand with what we're talking about re: San Diego and its beer scene, I suppose.

If Benchmark were in a neighborhood I gave a **** about, I might have actually gone there. (I went once. It was fine.)

This too - Iocation is so crucial to success.

The only major glaring exception to this is possibly Modern Times. I always marvel at the tasting room's success, considering it's in arguably the shittiest, most forgotten armpit of San Diego.

It's not that bad of a location. Close to the airport, right off of I-5 and I-8, not that far from downtown, miramar, north park, etc.

5ish minute walk from bus depot to Lomaland.
5ish minute walk from train station to Far West Lounge.

My only complaint about the Encinitas location (basically since they opened) is that they close at 10pm. So I would need to kill 2 hours on friday nights before La Paloma would open for their Rocky Horror event. Gotta bring that toast and squirt gun.

Within proximity to things? Sure. It's still a ****** area.

And I mean that literally - I don't think I've seen so much human **** on the sidewalks than I have in the Midway district.

Walk to EAH, although it closes at 11, walk back.... Even though the walk back only take 10 minutes.... Or get cans and do late night drinking in the park near there.... Or just DM and come drink at my place.

Haven't been to SF recently eh?
I don't think I've lived that sheltered of a life, but I was shocked by how much human **** there was on the SF sidewalks the last time I was there. Downtown SD gets some but has crews who clean it up every day. SF totally owns the ******-sidewalk title.

I’ve been living in SF for two years, it’s truly a ********.

You can barely go down the street without feces/urine, homelessness and their assorted trash, and/or people shooting heroin.

Ha, it's been years, but if there's really that much ****, then I'm out dawg
I was actually about to suggest to the other half we go back sometime soon. Then this thread happened.
raw

Jeez, you guys are sensitive. It's not like you wade through it or anything. Certain neighborhoods are bad in that you'll see it. Other parts are fine. San Diego has some gross areas as well, they're just more removed from the public eye for better or worse.

Visiting San Francisco is still entirely worthwhile. As long as you don't go wandering around the Tenderloin without an explicit purpose and use the same basic common sense you'd exercise in any major metropolitan area, you'll have zero issues.

Another instance of humor and nuance getting lost in the medium of type. I have no doubt the homeless problem is escalating and I also have no doubt that overall it's a fantastic place to visit. I'm still leaning towards a spring time trip next year.

Yeah, this. I don't enjoy ****, but that hasn't precluded me from going to Modern Times. I'm sure that won't stop me from going to San Francisco - even though I have images of the entire city now being made of poo

Sometimes the **** really is worth the squeeze

Question.. For people who try to do IP trades here in San Diego, where is the best place to try to get something done? I used to use Reddit. Seems like BA is pretty inactive. I don't have FB, but I suspect that is probably the answer here?

reddit and FB (sorry) for me.

Hype is obviously gone, but surprised to still see this available more than an hour in: https://abnormalbeer.co/ba-releases/ba-makaveli

Had it yesterday. I enjoyed it a lot. A lot different than the coffee bomb it was before aging. I think the pricing needs to come down for them to be instant sell outs. Also, tried the other BA offerings; maple morning and brick in yo face. I like maple mornings and found Barrell Aging didn't do much for me to want to pay and brick in yo face for the price I can get Modern Times. If you are around Abnormal and it's still on tap it is worth it to try if you like coconut pastry stouts. With that I bought bottles of BA makaveli because I liked it and I have friends who I know will enjoy receiving one.
