Sounds like this bit was more important than how good the beer was:
Yeah, that certainly helped the decision for sure.

Either way, that's pretty ******. Monkey Paw was one of the first places that made East Village actually worth going to. I remember being there the Friday of opening weekend and chilling with Derek when he was still brewing there.

“It will become another bar eventually however, it’s going to take probably a few months before that comes to fruition.”

Sounds like a dumping of the brand name and re-opening as something else. Curious if still a brewery or just a beer bar... or back to what it was before.

I honestly just took that as lip-service - the equivalent to a parent telling their kid "oh we'll get that for you later I promise."

After all this hubbub, I wouldn't count on anything going there to be nearly as successful as Monkey Paw.

Define "successful." I'm sure no replacement will be as popular with the old school beer crowd, but a well-executed CBC/South Norte tasting room - as rcubed guessed - could easily be more profitable by appealing to a broader crowd and siphoning foot traffic from 10 Barrel.

That's a great point.

I always forget that even in a city that's the self-proclaimed "beer capital of the world," the vast majority doesn't know or even cares about all the drama and ******** behind a bar/brewery/whatever.

I mean, FWIW I never went there for MP beer. Cosimo had this weird cult following that I never understood. I went there because it was a decent place to eat and watch sports. Plus if you weren't feeling beer, you could have a cocktail. That was nice.
There's some odd pockets of cult followings in San Diego I never understood either. Like, Mike Hess of all places has one for some reason.

Cellamaker and FO still on last night at Toronado. Baby Blammo is so damn good.

Grateful we get Cellarmaker a few times a year.

Yup. People say we don't get seasons out here. But we totally do. We get Cellaramker at Toro for Dankess, Celarmaker at Toro for beer week, Cellarmaker at Toro for Toro's anniversary, and we get Cellarmaker again prolly. That beats whatever Summer, Winter, Spring, and October are every time.

Getting ours tomorrow! Can't wait to try it.

Any other cool things I should be aware of in the Normal Heights-ish area?
Bottlecraft right across the street from NPBC has a small but well curated draft list, offers any bottle for in-store consumption with a nominal corkage fee, and most importantly, has an excellent cheese counter for both on-site consumption or to-go sales.

Aside from that, you've definitely got the highlights of the neighborhood.

I'll be hitting up (in no particular order) this following this weekend:

Rip Current
Eppig
Blind Lady
Bine and Vine
Tiger Tiger
Fall Brewing
North Park Beer Company
Toronado

If you want some bomb ass cocktails, you also have:
  • Sycamore Den (across the street from Blind Lady)
  • Polite Provisions (two blocks from Fall Brewing)
  • Seven Grand (across the street from North Park Beer Co)
