Actually rather delicious. I was scared with the barrel selection but it worked out rather well. Got some nice chocolate and dark fruit flavors out of it. Sadly I couldn't let it warm up entirely since we had a lane reservation (lolz, you gotta reserve the lanes) for axe throwing. Turns out, I'm not that terrible at it and will survive in a zombie apocalypse.

It was on draft, and it was only for members. You got a taster ticket with your pickup for a free 4oz pour of it. I did not ask if I could pay for another 4oz pour though.

wolf13, still on tap, but the server did not think it would last till the weekend. No additional pours allowed.

I am not a big fan of wine barrel aged stouts. This had that peppery, tannic taste that I could do without. Looking forward to see what they do with a rum barrel or whiskey barrel-aged version.

Hey dudes, I'll be down in SD (well, Vista, but who's counting?) for xmas, and for the first time in years I should have time to do some real beer stuff. I'm definitely planning on doing Churchill's and Pizza Port Carlsbad, what else is good now? I'll almost certainly be going to the zoo, any good lunch/beer spots around there? It sounds like Alpine is slowly coming back from the dead, is it worth making the trek if you're somewhat time-limited? I'm so out of touch with the scene that Societe is still the new hotness for me...

If you're near the zoo, may as well check out Balboa Park and have lunch at Panama 66 (owned by the Blind Lady and Tiger! Tiger! folks.)

Don't bother with alpine tbh. Better off just parking near 30th and University in North Park and hitting Toronado, North Park Beer Co, Bottlecraft, Rip Current North Park, etc.

Modern Times Encinitas (Far West Lounge) is close by. PP Bressi is also probably closer than Carlsbad, but both are good depending on tap lists. And Burgeon in Carlsbad

If you go to the zoo, grab lunch at Lola 55 for tacos or The Balboa for a burger. The 30th and University corridor that Tyrsis mentioned is definitely close enough to the zoo to hit after lunch. Go out to Point Loma and check out Modern Times if you haven't been and then Eppig's waterfront location as well (good food at Point Loma Seafoods or Mitch's near there). All of the above are kid friendly assuming you're bringing your little one along on these adventures.

It'll be a mix of kid-toting and not, I think, based on our whims and his grandparents. We'll see.

Thanks for the tips!

There's more going on in downtown Vista these days (Mother Earth, Belching Beaver, Bear Roots, Wavelength) plus newer breweries like Battlemage are worth checking out and I think Booze Brothers has really improved in a last couple of years.

Don't forget about Bagby Beer in Oceanside plus Northern Pine is making some good beer.

If you're going to Church, more good spots are near there like the Urge Common House (such a great spot), Wild Barrel (a stone's throw from Lost Abbey), Newtopia Cyder, and Raging Cider.

Seconded - that NPBC/Toro/Bottlecraft/RCNP combo is absolutely killer.

The good thing about the zoo is that it's within a few miles of like everything in San Diego, so it's not a stretch to suggest practically anything in North Park/Hilllcrest for good eats. Just from there, you're within five minutes of Modern Times North Park and The Taco Stand two doors down (which has some of the better SD Mex food in town).

****, you're only like a mile and a half from Grand Ole BBQ, which is legit Texas-style BBQ in a picnic-style setting - and you can BYOB for $5/head.

If you end up in downtown Vista, belching bever has a restaurant with all their beers and a great guest bottle list. There is an outside area too which tends to have children, and a large area for lounging.

I never made it to Battle Mage while I was living in Carlsbad, but I always wanted to check them out. Them, Roleur, and a few others opened up right when Burgeon did, but I found I spent most of my time schlepping down to Modern Times (near work), Pizza Port Bressi Ranch, or Burgeon.

Burgeon/PP Bressi/Rouleur is a great combo for sure.

Any word on barrel aged?

Alesmith Anvil members....Mr. Izor just confirmed over on the FB that if it is pouring on draft then it is growler-able for members.

Oh so are they going the way of MT Theory with that perk? Member fills of anything? Limited time only, or all the time going forward?

Limited, basically until the end of the year. Also, Lotza kicked last night...so that fill option is now gone.

Jumping on the shameless plugs train. Before you grab a Riding Giants from Stawn's smiling face at RCNP, stop by NPBC and grab bottles of Death Before Dying w/ (a lot of) Madagascar Vanilla. This was a single barrel of DB4D in Heaven Hill for 17 months plus 23 primo vanilla beans. We net 289 x 500ml bottles, limit 4 per person. Drops tomorrow, Saturday, 12/22 at 10:30am. There will be about 4 gallons on draft for tasters.
