Able to get my hands on a BFM 20th Anniversary Grand Cru, anyone had it yet? Worth the 30$ price tag?

I swear I've had the worst luck with Fantome. I'm done with them, this beer was really bad unfortunately.

Super dry but not in a good way, had an astringent, bitter soap flavor that lingered forever. Mouthfeel was oddly full and coating. Super heavy on isoamyl acetate, had a ton of banana and pear (also not in a good way). The only redeeming quality was the nose which was excellent somehow.

I had a very similar bottle, maybe the same batch. It was the thickest saison I've ever had and had what I could only describe as a webbed element to the mouthfeel. I wasn't as put off by the taste but hope the other bottle I bought the same day is a different roll of the 'tome dice.

I feel like I should have heard of Paesano's but I haven't. Now I want to order a sandwich. Will keep in mind next time we do delivery.

Best hot sandwiches in the city (if you don’t go to johns for a steak).

We left for 5 years iong516. I can probably count on one hand the number of sandwiches I ate while I was gone. Couldn’t even find deli in DC that was worth it, let alone a seeded long roll that didn’t taste like cardboard.

Happy to provide sandwich eating deets for the city. The loss of Sarcones is really a big hit. Can’t wait for Angelo’s to take their place.

To stay on topic, this batch of lunaire is delicious right now.

Upright Flora Rustica: "a bright, tea-like saison brewed with three Oregon grown flowers: hops, calendula, and spring yarrow. Open fermented and bottle conditioned."

Always a big favorite of mine. Label starts things off right noting that it sits at a very-reasonable 5.1%. Nose is exquisite with headline floral notes alongside a touch of bright citrus and underlying herbal gin character.

The flavor is slightly bitter and leans more toward the herbal side; it's still floral, but most of the citrus character from the nose falls by the wayside.

Light and dry mouthfeel with a lingering earthy bitterness. Certainly thirst-quenching and absolutely always keeps me coming back for more.

If you're following this thread and haven't tried any of Upright's saisons, I highly suggest that you do so.

I swore off Fantome after trying at least 15 different bottles over a period of a few years and never having a good one. I don't need to gamble on my beer with so many good options around.

Just letting everyone know that I am drinking Fantome Printemps with abawol01 and he’s loving it! Another convert!!!

I have one Fantome left in the cellar but I'm not holding my breath. Friend said he had a bottle from the same batch that was horrible. Might open it soon.

The past couple years of Printemps have been fantastic. I get a lot of sage from it, which I am a sucker for in Saison. Dry and a little funky, too. Great 'Tome.

Am I a serious knower now?

Apprentice Knower. Almost there.

What’s a good place to start with Fantome? I just had a bottle of the regular saison which I thought was terrible. Couldn’t finish my pour. Some of his bottles are around Boston and I’m thinking of giving them one more try.

How old was the bottle? The last 2 years or so have been awesome.

Purchased two weeks ago in Amsterdam and I opened it that same day. I didn’t, however, take note of a bottling date. I’m assuming it was fresh, but who knows.

What did you not like about it?

For starters there was an odd mouthfeel — almost... slick? The spice was at once overwhelming and yet sort of unidentifiable. Some black pepper and then who knows. It was too much for me, though.

Sounds similar to the one I opened like 2 weeks ago.

Sounds like you maybe had the same batch as the one I just posted about in the 'Tome thread.

The best recent 'Tomes I've had that were awesome straight out of the gate were Desert Ghost, Sante 19, Printemps, Strange Ghost, and De Tous le D'japes. Some of these saw Distro and can still be found.

Vertignasse will be awesome in a few months. Pissenlit is all over the place. Noel is a great beer, just different and traditional for a Tome.

Drinking a Fantome is always an adventure and a mystery. Most of the standard saisons I’ve had over the last 2 years have tasted like citrus juice spiked with brett and various bugs. The mouthfeel is always “different” from other saisons that are more straight edge.

Definitely not for everyone.

One more thing, too (and I am a ******* broken record so I apologize to anyone who has seen this exact post from me in the past):

Almost every Tome I've had has been released way too early. When they are fresh, they are underattenuated, thick, and phenolic. I try to sit on them for 6 months at least. They don't shine until they dry out and get some signature Tome funk shining through.

A good recent example is a batch of La Dalmatienne I sat on. I hated it at first. 6+ months later, it was one of the very best beer experiences I've had this year.
