Has anyone tried Suggestion of Mass?
Yeah, it tastes exactly as you would expect. Thicc, sweet and lots of coconut and vanilla. 5oz at a time is all I could handle.
The batch on draft is still the pilot batch from LA, the new batch (brewed in San Diego) hasn't been served yet. I wouldn't expect massive changes but they did make some tweaks when they scaled it up.

As a heads up to anyone with a large quantity of BA cans, check to see if any were warping.

One of my DT with pistachio looked like it was about to explode. I popped it and it was ultra carbonated and sour.

MT credited me because they're awesome obviously. But just to keep yall aware.

Stored cold or in a closet? Not judging either way, just curious if I need to check all the cans I have in the back of my beer fridge.

Cupboard. House never gets hotter than 74 probably.

I wanted to see a photo of the can!

I got some jreams, and while keeping them in the fridge, I saw a big bulge the other day on two of them. I don't remember seeing that damage when I put them in the fridge. Wondered if it was about to exploded? So I Opened it up, and it was amazing like the other ones.

Don't know if I'm crazy, or not.

Good to know though, will keep their cans in the fridge.

Per the League renewals email on Sunday, Encinitas will be as a pickup location (as will Anaheim and Santa Barbara whenever they open).

October 2018 Preview Tasting

Assorted Notes:
1) Leanne was sadly absent, and a number of people mentioned or asked about her absence. She was missed, as we all enjoy her presence, but the fact that she wasn't there allowed for...

2) One of the best Steven/Andrew tastings we've had in a while. Andrew was a bit feistier than usual, Steven was still on an emotional high from enjoying some expired Stone IPA on the world's longest train ride from Anaheim to SD, and they had no moderating influence to keep them from spending 90 minutes taking potshots at each other. I'm sure some people would rather just hear about the beer, but tonight might have been the most dynamic edition of those two putting the fun in dysfunction we've seen yet. We also had a brief Justin Holmes appearance where, as usual, he dropped some killer knowledge about their process for handling adjuncts and adding them to beers.

3) There's a lot of wine-related stuff in process, but I missed most of that specific discussion. I did catch the cider discussion, though - our 2019 membership will include the option to purchase a few cider variants, the first of which will be bottles of a Wickson cider from Washington that was fermented in-house and aged in oak barrels.

4) Black House Black Friday will be happening at the Fortress of Raditude as it did last year and it promises to be an awesome event. It's been one of my favorite events every year of Modern Times' existence and this year should be no different. Andrew was rather coy with his teasers, but there will be some special coffee beers and something involving glitter. Special Projects giveth, Special Projects taketh away - if slipping glitter into beer every once in a while keeps them happily churning out world class beer, I might one day learn to tolerate it. Maybe.

Tasting Notes:
1) Detect Evil
Style: Hazy DIPA
Score: 4.0
Notes: Preface, I don't like Enigma hops (or I've yet to enjoy how they come across in any beer I've tried them in). I sort of wish Enigma didn't exist, so it's not faint praise when I say this is the least objectionable example of an Enigma beer I've ever had. The aroma opens up with a heavy dose of dankness, followed by onion, pine resin, and orange zest. The palate leans further away from the dank end of the spectrum as it opens up with juicy citrus and tropical fruits before the dankness wafts back in on the backend. There are no technical flaws here - hence the good score - and a lot of people seemed to love it. Just not my jam.

2) Devil's Teeth Aged in Bourbon Barrels w/ Hazelnuts, Vanilla, & Coffee
Style: Adjunct Imperial Stout
Score: 4.5
Notes: 100 pounds of Black House coffee, 150 pounds of hazelnuts, and 11 pounds of Ugandan and Tahitian vanilla beans. Hazelnut hits the nose first - it pretty much leaped out of the glass as it was being handed out, in fact - but don't go in expecting it to smell like Nutella. These are actual, roasted hazelnuts and there's no cocoa added, so it's very much a deep, toasty nut aroma. Coffee comes in right behind the hazelnut and is assertive but restrained, while vanilla wafts around in the background, poking through and complementing the aroma without taking over. The flavor mostly follows the nose, although the vanilla is a bit stronger, creating a slightly sweeter combination of the constituent flavors. The semisweet chocolate from the base beer pops a bit more as well, leading towards a hazelnut mocha flavor, but lacking the artificial elements you'd get out of the drink. Quite lovely, although I'd highly suggest letting it warm, the hazelnut really pops after 20 - 30 minutes.

3) Devil's Teeth Aged in Bourbon Barrels w/ Macadamia Nuts, Coconut, & Cocoa
Style: Adjunct Imperial Stout
Score: 4.75
Notes: Holy macadamia nuts! 350 pounds of coconut, 200 pounds of macadamia nuts, and 150 pounds of cocoa nibs. The first whiff is almost all macadamia nuts - that lightly salted, rich, fatty aroma you get when you pop open a new package of macadamia nuts - but coconut quickly joins the fray, with fudgy chocolate lurking in the background. After a few sniffs, everything comes together to create the perception of a freshly baked white chocolate macadamia nut cookie, but not in the overly sweet, pastry stout sense. The palate presented a bit less coconut and a bit more chocolate, with restrained sweetness and rich bourbon barrel character that builds in the background. For me, this was the clear winner of the two variants for the evening and might compete with NOLA. Don't sleep on it.

4) Phantom Twilight
Style: Amphora Aged Blend of Witbier & Grisette w/ Cherries
Score: 3.5
Notes: The fruit is a blend of the second use cherries from Revolution of the Moon and Wizard & Graf w/ Cherries. The aroma was dominated but sulfur up front, letting it sit for a few minutes allowed it to dissipate, but it would still pop up from time to time, somewhat disconcerting. Behind the sulfur, there was a heavy dose of amphora-derived minerality, restrained lactic acidity, mild cherry character, and some light barnyardy funk wafting around. The flavor was more pleasant as it opens with a quick burst of acidity before minerality, oak, and light funk take over. Moderate cherry character comes through on the mid-palate to backend, but this seemed to be the least fruit character they've gotten out of the second use series. I'm really curious to hear other people's thoughts on this one, the sulfur was quite distracting to me, but once that cleared up, it was a solid beer, albeit not particularly remarkable when compared to the standard they've set.

5) Celestial City Aged in Marsala Barrels
Style: Funky Saison Aged in Marsala Barrels
Score: 4.25
Notes: They weren't able to determine too many details on the origin of the marsala barrels, but they suspect that they housed wine on the dry end of marsala spectrum. The aroma opens up with a big dose of fruit - pears and light stone fruit - followed by oak, hay and barnyard funk, and touches of freshly baked rustic bread. A light, lemony acidity hits the tongue first before a similar fruit profile takes over with pears, apricots, and grapes. Hints of oak come in on the mid-palate along with horse blanket and hay, leading to a light finish reminiscent of the classic funky saison profile, with hints of barrel-derived sweetness layered on top. A long bottle conditioning stint has led to beautifully creamy carbonation, perfectly effervescent but not prickly. I'm a big fan of these more esoteric barrel choices for funky saisons, they allow the base to shine while providing new and interesting complementary elements.

It's actually happening.....

Random special sale question. If you are not in the league can you still specify a different pickup location? I haven't done a special sale since leaving the league but with Encinitas opening sometime in the future I may change that.

I believe the answer is no for the public to specify different pickup locations. It was offered as a member perk.

I am not 100% certain though.

You can select your pickup location for each sale at the time of purchase, you just can't use a proxy to pick it up for you.

Xul is correct on the pickup locations and proxies.

On another note...

If any current members are wondering what next year's League merch looks like, I've been posting pics all weekend on the League Facebook and Instagram. I'll be sending out a newsletter with full 2019 details when renewals begin on Tuesday at 10 AM.

Cheers,
