Batch remains sadly unimpressive. I really want to like them, but I just can't. Maybe the new Eastern Market place will put out good beer??

There's plenty of restaurants in Detroit itself where you can get good beer. Roast and Slow's certainly near the top of the list. I just want a good brewery with above average beers and that also serves food. Just not anything like that in Detroit itself right now.

I heard the food was great at Batch?

If it is of any consolation, I have enjoyed JP Ann Arbor, but have heard their chosen setup for Chicago is a disaster. I am sure the beers are great, but the service arrangement is not working.

There's plenty of good places to eat in Detroit. I'm not going to Batch to eat.

As Gonzoillini mentioned, Old Nation makes fine food and does equally fine beer. How ******* hard is it for one place in Detroit to do that? Founders and JP in Detroit is the best we've got.

Hopcat brews some of its own beers, and some of its food is quite good.

Honestly the only places I have drank downtown are Roast and Slows. Such a suburbanite, I know, but I really don't leave the greater Ferndale area when I am in town, unless required to for family reasons.

Why would you? If I didn't have to deal with the shitstorm that is 75 and 696 on weekday evenings, or even on weekends sometimes I would go that way more often.

You forgot JP (but then mentioned it in a later post). I think the midtown/Cass stretch is good enough now to have a great afternoon and evening especially if a game or concert is going on right after or before.
Between Hopcat, JP, Founders, and even 8 Degrees (just for taps) I'm more than happy with the current state.

I'd agree with the food for sure. I've not been disappointed although I've only ate at brunch hours.
Who cares about their own beer? The tap options are usually excellent, IMHO.

I continue to remain completely Meh when it comes to Hopcat. Both Detroit and Royal Oak just don't do it for me. The bro factor in RO is off the ******* charts.

i'd have to agree - i rarely find myself going to detroit for anything beer. between homes, JP, and wolverine, along with cultivate, i've got very little reason to stray further than 5 miles from my house. certainly a world of difference from when i moved here and only wolverine was open.

Especially now that I left.

For me its all proximity as well. If I lived near Ferndale thats where I'd be. Same with AA, and dare I say RO.

Alas, it takes me 5-10 min from my office to get to midtown WITH border traffic on a good day. I would do it all the time if toll was free.

I agree in theory. But I was responding to the pointed question about breweries that have both good for and beer, so their brewing capacity seems relevant. Moreover, I think they're actually one of the better MI breweries. I've been especially impressed by Blambic and Smore Sassiness, but they make a number of pretty good beers.

Driving back up to the motherland on Sunday from Texas. Should be up there 18-30, between the tri-cities and detroit area.

Excited to see that Kuhnhenn added some more 4-packs to the store. Just snagged one of the variety packs. More of the BBStout is available as well.

What are the chances of running into some Speciation around Detroit? Does it go pretty quick? Should I plan on bringing up some bottles to trade for it? What about Transient?

I'll be on the lookout for some M43 and Boss Tweed, based on what people have been saying in this thread.

Depending on where you are in metro-Detroit, I’ve seen all the Speciation bottles sit at a few stores.

Was at 8 Degrees today and saw two Speciation bottles on shelf. Old Nation deliveries to metro D are Fridays.

All of the barrel aged beers are fantastic. The blackberry and cherry eisbocks are also very good. Didn't get to try the raspberry or blueberry

Opened a bottle last night. It is beyond reproach. I hope the 2009 BBBW is still flowing when I get to the Warren location tonight.

All of the barrel aged beers are fantastic. The blackberry and cherry eisbocks are also very good. Didn't get to try the raspberry or blueberry

Eisbocks are also cheaper by the glass than by the bottle. They let me do 2 "half" pours as well (more like 3/4). I'd tried Cherry and Blackberry also. Amazing nose on both. Strong, sweet and a bit boozey, very fruity, but half of what you catch on the nose. Still not quite my thing, had trouble finishing 2 half pours.

BB Stout was good, BB Barleywine was great, BB4D was tapped out.
