Nope, this was done by the incompetence of English refereeing. BTW the call on Rudiger was correct. The last man rule on longer applies. Still it was gratifying to see Neil Warnock pissed.

And for last man to not apply, it has to be an attempt to play the ball. Rudiger was nowhere near it.

If one wanted to make the case that Kepa would have made it first and it wasn't a goal scoring opportunity (which I recall is the actual rule, not intrinsically last man), I'd listen but be skeptical. Because that's a better argument (which the NBCSN commentators suggested as well).

Rudiger knew what he was doing. Cynical, professional foul. Red card.

this how it was explained to me from a Liverpool fan's POV:

I saw Rudiger trip over his feet & fall. Pawson saw it that way as well, but I just found out that the last man rule is not valid anymore + the commentators were saying it was.

The way I understand it, "last man" was never actually valid. It's denial of a goalscoring opportunity. Now, if you're the last man and take down an attacker, 95 times out of 100 you're denying a goalscoring opportunity.

The rule change was that earnest attempts to win the ball would not qualify. Cynical/professional/deliberate fouls still do.

Pawson determined it wasn't a goalscoring opportunity. Thus no straight red. Which I think was the wrong call.
