The "best" formula for finding ABV...

I've seen three or four different formulas for finding ABV, can anyone steer me in the right direction?

Preliminary readings indicate an OG of 1.048, and a FG of 1.014.

We should bottle this weekend.

Other references say 105 and some say 131.


Subtract the FG from the OG and multiply by 105 to get ABW

1.040 - 1.010 = 0.030 x 105 = 3.15 %

To convert ABW to ABV multiply the ABW by 1.25.

and 105*1.25=131.25 so using a factor of 131 will go straight to ABV without going through ABW first.

That works too, but I bet you count bottles, which means you are calculating.

Likewise, cept my laptop also has a built in calculator!



Anymore the hydro is more for feedback on determining my efficiency & status of fermentation. I determine ABV more for those that inquire when they drink my brew.

Just to clarify the formula as Papazian gives it is a 1.05 factor to calculate the ABW, and and additional factor of 1.25 to convert to ABV (giving a total factor of 1.3125)
