In the small town division I would nominate Ellicottville, NY. Population ~520, probably a few thousand on winter weekends. 20 bars/restaurants, and a damn fine brewpub.

I'll throw a vote in for Madison, WI and Memphis, TN. Madison may not allow open containers, but the beer culture is amazing. Memphis is just a good time. Biele St. allows you to have open containers the last time I checked...

Second Madtown- beer and cheese, amazing that people stay in shape.

Ugh. You people that voted Madison are nuts. I used to live there. I hated it so much that to this day I wont go back even for a day unless I absolutely have to.

Best beer city : Denver
Best get drunk city: New Orleans (plus the food is amazing and cheap)
Best beer city/get drunk city in Midwest: Madison, WI

This.

I'd throw Austin, TX in there too, just for all the cool spots. Not a great craft beer city though.

Hard to beat the chain of cities near denver, just because they have great breweries and awesome distribution.

I have family in Philly and visit a couple of time a year, I can't believe what a great beer city it is. It has Monk's Cafe voted one of the 10 best place on earth to drink beer. And that is just one of many.

I'd be prone to say the same about Denver (the metro esp.), personally...opinions!

Perhaps someplace in the Czech Republic. They drink more beer per capita than any other country in the world. Or so I've been told. :drunk:

For me it was lucky lager. Hienikan and grolch in the states are pretty high up there which is strange because both those beers served in holland were fantastic!

Sorry this was meant for another thread I'm subscribed to. Please disregard....defiantly time for bed

That's three for San Diego. Anybody not voting for their home town?:D
Portland was an ex-hometown vote. Now I'm in Central Oregon, and Bend is a great drinking city, but Portland wins on public transport. Getting home from a night of drink is just as important as how many places you can go.

Also, can't really comment on San Diego. Last time I did serious drinking there was in '96 when I was working Comic Con for Troma, so we hit a lot of places that were comping us or giving us great deals. I hope you don't still have all the silly stripper laws.

I should have mentioned NYC as a great drinking city. Open until 4 am officially, but you can stay well after the gates go down if you know the bar tender. But I always felt a little ****ty walking home while people were out for their 6 am jogs.

Even though New Orleans is my place, many years ago an old roommate of mine who lives in Galveston Texas thought it would be cool for us to do each other's Mardi Gras. Since Galveston's MG is the week before ours, I packed up and headed west. Not sure what it's like year round, but we hung out in this area called the strand. Much like the French Quarter with the bars everywhere and some great live music. This however was way before the craft beer invasion. Curious to see if that area of the island has more of an Austin feel nowadays. Austin is another of my top pics to drink and enjoy good music.

The only reason I didn't even mention NY is price. There's a few really good things going for NYC: expansive PT which means a drinker doesn't have to worry about driving, bars everywhere and open almost 24 hours, and every beer imaginable. But prices tend to be higher than other places and if you step outside, you're probably getting a summons for it.

Prague is pretty good. The mass produced stuff like like Branik, Staropramen, Gambrinous and Pilsner Urquel is generally pretty decent, readily available and cheap. There are some other breweries which have been creeping in to more and more pubs recently like Ferdinand (Czech brewery of the year 2011) Svijany (Runner up Czech brewery of the year 2011) and Cerna Hora who make some really amazing beers for unbelievably cheap prices. Then you have some fantastic specialist beer bars if you want something from microbrewery. All in all its great for a beer lover.

i'm torn between philly and nyc. i would have to say new york is the best place to do anything in (except park)- but philly put belgians on the u.s. beer drinking radar- and monk's is the sheezat.

I want to vote New Orleans (obvious reasons), but our beer scene is only just now up-and-coming. Avenue Pub reigns supreme in the beer world here, and a few nano-breweries have started cropping up, so within the year, we'll be a top beer city.

But for straight up drinking in general, can't go wrong with New Orleans, with our lax open container laws and 24 hour bars (what's a "last call"?) and 24 hour eateries, it's heaven.

How can you argue all of MN against San Diego?! Ok, CA vs. MN, guess who wins?

Here's a link to the Beer City USA 2011 Results.....Most all our Cities made the list!

Asheville Foodie: Beer City USA Poll 2011 Results - Asheville, NC Wins Again !

Who exactly conducted this poll?

I was in Asheville about 3 years ago, I do not remember it being all that great, especially when you've been spoiled with places like Portland.

Honestly, the only place I think I could vote over Portland is San Diego, but I have never been there, so I can't make that call just yet.

I am pretty sure Portland has 75+ breweries, micro breweries, nano breweries, beer bars etc.

EDIT: Forgot to mention the best part about Portland, STREET MEAT CAPITOL OF THE COUNTRY

I like the Avenue Pub (I like the balcony, but after a few beers those stairs are a MF), have you been to Lager's, Finn McCools, Cooter Brown's?

Lager's gets my vote as the best place.:D Will be there Sat night. :D

This is only half of the stairs. haha

If I had to pick from places that I have been, then I have to go with Fort Collins. Now that you can buy pints at New Belgium and then walk to Odells, Fort Collins Brewery, Coopersmith's, Pateros Creek, Equinox...That makes for some amazing drinking. I prefer a brewery/pub atmosphere to a bar atmosphere though.

As far as straight drinking cities go, how can you beat Austin? So many bars and live music at every one of them! It really does have the best nightlife.

Cancun Mexico.

When I was there in 2004 for spring break. We would literally buy a 12 pack and walk up and down the street drinking from it and the cops just wave to you. Then there are the clubs, $15 cover at one in particular with open bar and 50 mixed drinks to choose from. Attend a beach party and they practically force you to do keg stands!
