It's true what they say, once you go Lagavulin cask aged barleywine, you never go back. Album is the new one from Big Business.

Thoughts on the new Biz? It didnt strike me as very remarkable after 2 listens, which 80% of the time means I will really dig it after a few more spins.

It's fine. When I first heard Head for the Shallow and Here Come the Waterworks I felt they were one of the best bands around. I've felt they've mellowed quite a bit from Battlefields Forever and their subsequent albums. It lacks the visceral punch that their earlier work had, but they can still construct good songs and the sludginess is still there. This was just my first listen and I'll need a couple more before I can really pin down my take on this. Initial summation though, couple solid songs, overall the instrumentation kind of made me feel like I was listening to a Big Business 45 at 33 RPM by accident.

Worth noting: don't take my critique as a negative, a band's evolution isn't inherently good or bad. While their new stuff will never hit me the same as their early stuff did when I first came across it, I'm still glad I grabbed this.

I feel the same, and am enough of a fanboy to always keep an open mind. I have the first 2 albums locked away in a mental box, to avoid comparisons with newer stuff.

Loved the last album; Battlefields has plenty of redeeming moments as well. Some of my fave stuff are their less heavy, more droney/trippy/melodic songs.

But god dammit those first 2 albums still blow my head off.

Looking for some new music suggestions. I’m a grumpy old man & don't generally like newer music. So I guess based off what I’ve been posting, what ya got for me?

Funny thing is, I think the best bands/albums for the genres you're into...is the exact stuff you're posting. There really aren't any new bands/albums doing that late 90s super precise melodic straightforward skate punk anymore IMO. Or at least, not doing it well. Even that new Bouncing Souls record sucks from what I've heard. The new Bad Religion is pretty solid, but more of the same.

Hate to say it, but do you have Spotify? If so, after enough listening, they do a decent job of curating playlists that can expose you to new **** within the niches you listen to.

Thanks! Have Spotify (basic), Apple Music. During the day I usually listen to sports radio or XM Bennington show. Just wasn’t sure if there was some newer rock/punk etc I should check out.

Not super new and they've broken up but are rumored to be getting back together...the Barreracudas (lead singer's last name is Barrera...clever right?) are the only somewhat recent good "pop punk" that I can even think to recommend. "Can Do Easy" is a flawless record for me. Songs structures and melodies/harmonies are pretty tight.

Maybe try Ty Segal's "Freedom's Goblin". Not punk, but I maintain there are a lot of grunge elements to what he's doing. This album was pretty accessible, but might not be exactly what you're after.

I'll keep thinking...
