Back from the Grave volume #6. Iowa brewed Pseudo Sue. Outstanding pairing. The joy of having fresh, IA brewed PS cans really elevates the crunchy, loaf eye fuzz of these songs. I believe this is an earlier pressing of this record as there's and advertisement for $7 t-shirts inside as well as requests for lodging on future record hunting trips. 9/10.

The Uranium Club - Human Exploration. Weldwerks Coffee Coconut stout. I understand the comparisons to Wire. Lots of energy and catchy song writing. The beer is kinda heavy, oily and sweet from the coconut. The coconut overpowers everything else too. A bit too much for me. The Uranium club is highly recommended, though.

I need to post more to this thread but I suck at taking pictures. Most of the time I'm drinking coffee when I listen to records too. This is one of my favorite threads on this site though so...

Those Back from the Grave albums are ******* awesome. Just tons of fun stuff.

RL Burnside Mississippi Hill Country Blues and O'Dell's Settle Down Brown. I forget why, but I stumbled upon a video of Burnside playing a few songs and got really curious, which resulted in a Fat Possum Records order. I don't know alot about this type of music, but man, what an outstanding sound. I guess if you know you know and if you don't find out.
Unfortunately I don't give brown ales a chance these days or drink much O'Dell but maybe I've been missing out. Kind of a fruity hop character with a very well balanced maltiness. Great flavor and very drinkable.

Junior Kimbrough All Night Long and Coop's Alpha Hive. Part of the Fat Possum order and another outstanding album that I don't really know how to describe the sound of. The guitar has loads of tone and when the drums and bass kick in it sounds like some kind of primitive rock n roll...or something. Just heavy and awesome.
I was weary of buying an older style DIPA as I was imaging overly sweet malts and booze, but Alpha Hive totally delivered. Canned on 01/23 it's like a DIPA flavored Tootise Pop. Plenty of engaging hop character with supporting malts, honey sweetness, and a little heft. Way better than this year's Hopslam IMO.

ISO recommendations for similar sounds as those above^

Along with Kimbrough and Burnside, T Model Ford is probably my next go to from the Fat Possum catalog...

Two other blues artists that I really dig and consider super dirty are Mississippi Fred McDowell and Big Joe Williams. Not nearly as sludgy as the guys on Fat Possum...but definitely have an edge to them.

EDIT: Cedell Davis is another. I think he maybe did one or two records for Fat Possum, but popped up on other labels mostly. Last suggestion - the FP documentary "You See Me Laughin" is ******* classic.

Also check out R.L. Burnside's later albums, A Ass Pocket of Whiskey, Mr. Wizard, Come On in, as he has The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion backing him on those. Totally different sound, more electric and raw.

Since davey101 is awesome and is giving me his old turntable, I'm getting ready to jump back in to vinyl. I haven't had any since my previous collection disappeared while I was in college 20 years ago.

So, where do you all pick up your vinyl? Are there still used stores kicking around out there? There used to be an awesome place back when I lived in Rochester (on Mt. Hope, I think, can't remember the name of the place), don't know any place like that around here.

I don't know about CT specifically, but I've never been to any area that doesn't have a record store within a reasonable distance. There are actually quite a few new stores opening up and/or old stores that didn't/stopped carrying vinyl that have started carrying it because of the market growth.

When all else fails = discogs is an online gathering of music shops across the globe. Sort of like ebay, but specifically for records (and CDs, cassettes, etc). I typically only use this as a last resort when I've exhausted the used bins at my local shops and there aren't too many fun looking new releases on the horizon. And I always make sure I find a seller that has a few (cheapish) things that I want at once to make the shipping worth it.

There are places by me that sell new Vinyl. I was actually looking at in Newbury Comics when I decided that really wanted to get a record player again. I just don't want to start building a record collection again at 20-30 a pop. However, a quick google showed a used record store in the next town over I'm going to have to check out. I'm also hoping that when I'm in NYC in a couple weeks the places I used to buy from in high school are still alive and kicking. I was also just curious if there were good online places for used vinyl. I wound up buying The Kinks Greatest Hits on Amazon for 10$ but figured there might be some better choices out there.

discogs is worth it if you buy in bulk from a single seller who offers discounted shipping for bulk transactions. Lots of used vinyl in decent condition to be had. Nowhere near as fun to flip through bins, but is what it is...

Presume you're talking about Rochester NY. If you find yourself back that way, make sure to check out House of Guitars up on Titus in Irondequoit. That place is a legend and worth a trip.

Yes, Rochester, NY. The place I was talking about was Record Archive. Looks like it moved but still exists. Used to be in a creaky old house. New space looks very open but lacking in that atmosphere. I've been to House of Guitars, but I lived in Brighton/Henrietta and didn't find it worth going out of the way when I had Record Archive right there.

First time I went to House of Guitars I printed out directions from Mapquest. The most direct route it plotted for me wound up taking me through the worst neighborhoods I'd ever seen in Rochester. Never took that route again.

Thanks for the recommendations guys! I think that will be next album from Burnside I pick up, the A Ass Pocket of Whiskey. I mean, with that kind of backing band I can only imagine...
Just the other day I almost picked up a Mississippi Fred McDowell album, but put it back do to it's collector scum pricing. I'll have to hunt down a reissue.
You See me Laughin is on youtube. Will watch tonight.

Currently sipping on a Brew Gentlemen sour and spinning a non-Music Matters (yes, I know) Joe Henderson reissue and can't be bothered to figure out how to upload a picture.

Also, RIP Music Matters.
