I can't stand any true whiskey. No matter if it is scotch, single malt, kentucky straight, whatever. I don't care if you serve it from the nipples of virgin princesses. Still nasty.

It's the wood, I think. Take away the wood and I might love it. I do very much like CatDaddy Carolina Moonshine. Spiced corn whiskey, no wood.

I'd still go on a distillery tour. I would however skip the tasting and just get a glass of ice water.

its an excellent acquired taste.

Laphroigh 15 *swoon*

We must of be related too. I cant stand when people are too serious for no reason. Life is to short to worry about the bull crap. And to drink crapy beer.

LOL....but I'm afraid I'm still guilty of providing crappy beer to drink on occasion....that ain't no home brew in cute butts hand.

But then... you wouldn't go on the tour in the first place correct??

i was just recently at jacks abby in ma and the tour guide asked if we knew what ingredients made up beer , and people quickly named off hops, water, and yeast. so i said grain(even thought i usually don't bother participating) and he corrected me saying malt.heh first mistake. we get up to the brew deck and walking up you can clearly see all the insulated pipes with steam stickers on them . then when hes done bull****ting about the system i ask if it was a steam heated system and he replied " what do you mean steam"

God, that's funny! Just like w/ beer I suppose, people like what they like, and there is NO objective standard for what is good.

Maybe you're hypersensitive to wood flavors. I am partial to Rye whiskey, something about it just works for me. I also brew a Rye beer, same thing.

So perhaps if given a chance you might give Rye a shot. My favorite is Bulleit Rye.

Now, that said, I was in Door County (the finger in Wisconsin's glove which protrudes into Green Bay and Lake Michigan) and had a whiskey there to which NOTHING has ever come close. It was stunning. I'm surprised it costs as little as it does--nothing I've tasted has ever been as smooth.

What whiskey was that?

I would go on a distillery tour. I still find the process fascinating, even if I don't care for the end product.

I have done. Old Overholt Straight Rye. It was tolerable as a sour.

I've only ever had one experience where I "enjoyed" drinking whiskey. It was a night where my father and I were re-kindling our lost relationship. We were drinking knob creek, and that night it was particularly sweet. Still hated the flavor but that night it was tolerable.

I want to be that guy, but I have introverted tenancies and have problems speaking up with groups.

The few times i'll do tours now i'm usually ignoring most of what's being said and instead trying to get a look at the brewing setups and all the tools and toys laying around. I know you're talking about the mash, but I just want to go nerd out over the brew controller.
