Wen I was mashing yesterday I got very different reading from two thermometers. My handy instant electric thermometer was reading 148 while the glass thermometer was reading more like 155. I figured either temp would get me scarification and I was hoping that the real temp was someplace in the middle so I let the mash run.

I did check the two in some hot water later on and they read basically the same thing.

Has anyone experienced this. My basic thought is that my mash tun was hotter in the middle then near the top, but this seems like a big difference.

Also my gravity came out at 1.060 and I was shooting for 1.077. I have never been this far off before, but this is only like my 8th AG batch.

Thanks for the help.

Ice in a small container is how you want to calibrate your thermo.

Water boils at different temps due due changes in pressure or altitude. But I've water is 32f everywhere.
