Has anyone tried drilling and tapping the keg wall for 1/2 npt for weldless fittings?

no but with fair certainty it will not hold up. Too thin.

Jud,
The "weldless" fittings don't utilize "tapping" in order for them to work.
They clamp the inner and outer pieces together, compressing a silicone gasket or the like in order to make a leak proof seal.

As mentioned above, not enough material there to "tap", as there is no thickness to make the threads into.

Additionally if you have the ability such as a friend who can TIG weld or a machine/welding shop I would recommend getting your fitting welded to the keg. I've found that my weldless fitting eventually always shimy around when cleaning the keggel and as a result they eventually start to leak just a bit.
