Hello folks,

i was wondering if anyone knows the volatility of chlorine and fluoride in tap water and the general guidelines associated with using tap water for mashing.

I have used bottled water before but was wondering if I couldn't use tap water.

Any thoughts?

Fluoride I'm pretty sure is benign to brewing (someone double check that for me). Chlorine on the other hand is undesirable, that being said I here leaving water sit overnight will get rid of the chlorine and boiling will definitely get rid of it. That being said you may still wanna worry about chloramine, that stuff won't boil off. Chlorine and chloramine can both be treated using campton tablets. You can also filter water but that takes longer if you are doing large batches.

It depends on your tap water, you'll need to get a municiple water report first...The "for the public" water report usually won't help, so you'll have to call, or email your water people, and tell them you are a hombrewer and you need info (if you look at the thread at the bottom, it will show you the variables you need to request.)

Then you start with this...
