does anyone else think this abbreviation is lame and overused here?

I do!

yeah, I knew there would be backlash... its stupid. sorry

Anyone who uses SWMBO abbreviation has been emasculated enough to have their man-card taken away. At least say you discussed X and decided against doing X.

The only thing about SWMBO I don't like is that they think they must be obeyed.

(Disclaimer: I've been known to have misogynistic views)

I resent that in many tv shows, movies and commercials, it seems OK for girls/women to step all over boys/men. And that the men seem too willing to be stepped on in the hopes that they might get lucky next weekend.

This is probably why I'm currently alone. I'm not willing to put up with this nonsense.

anyone who uses the abbreviation needs to get outside a little more often. turn off the minecraft, interact with other humans, move our of your in-laws basement.

I understand most of you will continue to use this lame expression, so be it. I came in here for beer advice as Im still learning as everyone really should be. I did not realize it would be so filled with oversharing about lack of "hand" in your relationships/home. Please please please stop with the swmbo. please

You obviously are a man outdated and need to find a relocation point (as I did) where the views are in place with your beliefs.

And I do not mean this in a bad way. Just because the rest of the man population is willing to give up their card does not mean that you have to.

Never regretting my decision! :mug:

This may just be a young crowd. The phrase was popularized in the 70's in a British television series. It may have appeared even earlier in the play and books from which the program developed, but I haven't seen or read those. It is intended to be humorous.

I do!

I rarely notice it anymore. But I've been here a long time. And I never use it myself.

I am curious to know, specifically, what you find lame or offensive about it. Most people just say it's sexist, or misogynistic.

popularized in the 1970's? irrelevant today ..

"The term originates from the H. Rider Haggard novel, "She" (first published 1886). The character Ayesha, known as She-who-must-be-obeyed, the Queen of Death, the White Goddess,of the lost city of Kôr who rules her kingdom with terror, She is the very image of the Femme Fatale. To disobey her or to scorn her is to earn & receive instantaneous death. "

please discontinue its use.

I never thought about it as sexist or mysogenistic... It just strikes a nerve with me. why is it used so much here? why here an nowhere else? why its continued overuse? get over it... am I right?

Why are we the ones who have to get over it when (again) it's tongue-in-cheek vs intentionally insulting, and only a handful of people find it annoying?

The problem may be there is an imbalance in the system, so maybe there should be a "he" version or a politically correct version that is genderless:

Like: "He Who Must Be Emotionally Abused" HWMBEA
or "My Equally Significant Other" MESO -- sorta has a ring to it!

Like I said before.. im sure its use will continue in an obviously annoying way. You don't have to get over it, its your life bro, its not like your swmbo is telling you that it must be stopped. barf

It's like a lot of Adam Sandler comedy, at first it was funny but then not so much hence the overused.

There are other ways of writing the same thing...

"I'm brewing this *insert beer style* for SWMBO." Sounds negative as if the person can't brew what he wants but instead has to brew what she wants, he is not a man of his own destiny.

"I'm brewing this *insert beer style* for my wife because she really enjoys it." Sounds better doesn't it?
