Just got home from my LBHS and realized i forgot a steeping sack for my grain and a hop sack too. Ive got way too much to do this week to get back there for$ 2 of product. Any household items that i could sub for these??

Got any sheer curtains you can cut up? I've used white voile curtain material with a zip tie before.

Hahaha dont think the bosslady would like that... i gotta find something though cs if i dont i cant make her the beer she wants!

I wouldn't trust panty hose. All of them have some tint to then. Run some near boiling water through them as a test and see the amount of color that comes out. Can't be good for the beer.

do you have a strainer/colander?

just strain after steeping and then either strain your hops/trub after the boil or just pour hops and all into your fermenter after you chill the wort down

I have a strainer basket for a fish fryer ut the holes are about 5/18" in dia and ots only about 6 inches deep. Spose i could line it with a double layer of cheesecloth and use that for the grains, or just tie it into a sack! Guess i shoulda put my thinking cap on earlier!

I wouldn't recommend it. nylon melts at about the boiling point of water.

Er, wha? Many of us use nylon (and yes, even pantyhose) in boiling wort with no issues.

I BIAB and use a $5 walmart voile curtain cut in half as my 'bag'. I'd say my beers are pretty good too, and they get better every time I brew.

Ok great thanks guys, this site has been an amazing resource for me. Im on my 4th batch and no longer using a kit to brew my beer. (Sippin my dunkel) cheers fellas....

I can say, with out any doubt that panty hose work, as i had to use them not 4 days ago. they worked fine, and i didnt notice any color seeping off them into the beer.

I stand corrected. My memory isn't what it used to be. The melting point of nylon is actually somewhere near 465 degrees F. Not sure what I was thinking.

A lot of people use nylon paint strainer bags from Home Depot or Lowels. They come in two sizes: 5 gal and 1 gal. They are cheap and they are reusable. You can also use them as hop bags for whole hops.

I use nylon pantyhose for keg hopping. Seem to work well thus far and they are much cheaper than paint strainer bags that I aways tell myself I will clean and reuse, but never do.
