Brand new at home brewing and listened to the guy at my lhbs. I'm on my 3rd batch and wanted to try something a little different and this is what was recommended for a little different flavor. I bought a kit from True Brew called California Common and some extra light DME. It was recommended that I add the priming sugar to the boil when I added my hops. Then I'm to use 1.25 cups of the extra light DME when I bottle. Everything else is identical to the instructions. What will this do to my beer?

It will cause the beer to be slightly thinner in body and a little bit more alcohol. Honestly at 5oz @ 5 gallons you probably wouldnt even notice a difference.

Yup, it will lighten the body a bit..... really dont know why he reccomended that for a "change"

probably just for the abv

Thanks guys! I'll be a little more discerning when talking with him next time. I think I'll do more research on this forum before buying more ingredients.

I'd have done the other way around. DME in the boil for hop additions, priming sugar in th bottling bucket. Lil better body that way.

In my usual mid-gravity ales,I use half a 3lb bag (1.5lb) of plain DME in a 3G partial boil for hop additions. I add the remaining DME & all the LME at flame out & steep 10 minutes coverd to pasteurize, which happens at 162F. The wort is typically hotter than that,so it works well before the chill.
