Stupid cheapo flask!

I just barely touched my relatively new 2 liter flask to the side of the sink and it broke. That was a ripoff to charge $30 for that thing...

Does someone know of or use a nice, tough 2 or 3 liter flask and where could I buy just one? I see lots available online but they all want to sell me a case of them. Also, Kimax or Nalgene or Pyrex, etc.? I know nothing about labware.

I would rather spend more now than to buy another $30 one that's just going to break in a month.

I'd recommend going right for a 5l flask...you won't regret it.

Before you're willing to spend s million on glassware just know that hitting glass on an edge exerts a lot of pressure (force over area) in a single point of avowed meant to take at most 10-15 psi if pressure. I've broken a lot of glassware at work by "tapping" it on the edge of something. I've also had a fan at high speed hit a crystal pilsner glass and just bounce off. Glass can be a fickle thing. Both tough and fragile.

To answer your question though, kimax, Pyrex, and nalgene are brand names. As long as it's borosilicate glass you'll get the toughness and inertness you need.

Ditto on the Pyrex flask - good quality and a good price.

I have the 2L that is linked above and it works well. I boil directly on the stove (always wear eye protection!) and never had an issue. I do sometimes - well, often, wish I had a 5L.

If I make a 1.5L starter I really need to babysit the thing or...BOOM! Volcano, baby!! I also get tired of doing a multi-step starter for lagers, etc.

Quart canning jars! Or if needed they do make 1/2 gallon ones! I did find 3 Kimax flasks on eBay for $5 each shipped and they are way thicker than some of the cheap ones I had that broke when looked at wrong.
